Recently I got new T520 which spews industrially scented air through its heat exhaust. It smells like some heavy machine working hard and I am not really driving it hot by any means. I checked internal temperatures and I am not much concerned because my other work-issued T520 does the same thing but I was wondering if that smell is going to go away soon or if you can do anything to reduce the aroma?

I had a slight odor when I first booted up...last an hour or so, then it disappeared. It actually alarmed me because that had never happened before with any thinkpads I've used.

Odd. There was an odor when I pulled mine fresh out of the box, but otherwise, no smell.

My T430s is fine, but T520 still has this odor. Maybe I should play some heavy games for week or so. :p

    Thanks for the replies.

That's the feces that the Chinese mix with the plastic to make it cheaper. They used the same method with drywall a couple of years ago.

    Stinkpad......gotta love it !

Put it outside (obviously avoid potential of liquids and other dangers to electronics), and run some burn-in tests with TPFanControl holding the fan at level 64.

It goes away with time, just like all other new electronics. In the mean time, avoid smelling the heat exhaust ;)

Never really noticed it when I opened up my W520. Did notice that the plastic body had that "New Plastic Smell" for a week (never took my laptop outside the first few weeks to air it out).
