I have been very happy with my T61. A couple weeks back I had it on my desk at work in a case that zips on 3 sides. I had forgot to zip one of the sides. When I went to pick up the case the laptop fell to the floor. If there could have been music playing, I would have heard "Adagio For Strings" and the fall would have been in slow motion.
The distance between the desk and the floor is about 4 ft. Also the floor is carpeted, but it is that industrial carpeting without any padding. It is just as hard as a bare floor. When my laptop hit the ground, the battery separated, the DVD drive completely came out and about a 1 inch piece of plastic broke from around the Kensington lock slot. Also the door the hard drive was half hanging on.
After all this, I put the battery back in, reseated the hard drive door and put the DVD back in. I took the plastic that broke off to fix later. I booted up the computer and everything was fine. Other then the trauma of the drop the t61 survived beautifully. There is nothing loose, other then the one small part that broke off, I cannot detect any damage. I was able to glue the broken part back on.
I couldn't be more happy then I have been with my t61. Hopefully, I won't have to repeat this test ever again, but the t61 passed my drop test.
