I admit that I'm still stumbling around with my T-60. However, I have never run across the following problem with any computer I've ever used before:

While searching picture or video files on my C-drive I have noticed that when I enter these files the screen begins to flicker; not a low-power flicker, rather like a strobe-like a warning, though no pop-up screen warns me of anything.

When I back out, everything is just peachy again. But what in the world is causing this problem? It can't be battery power, since I always keep my machine plugged in, and even so, the battery is always fresh.

Please let me know what's happening, before I have an epileptic seizure.

I've experienced the flickering screen as well, but mostly when i'm on battery. I don't think it's as extreme as your case but nonetheless it's a noticeable flicker. I would also like to know what's happening and if anyone else experiences this. I have an x61s.

It could be of a bad display driver. Just went through a plethora of flickering and odd behavior running 3d apps. Driver change fixed everything. My flickering was really severe and the colors reversed so I thought it was a possible hardware problem.

I would suggest downloading 169.04 from www.laptopvideo2go.com with the modded inf and installing them to see if this resolves your problem. (Make sure you uninstall your previous drivers via control panel first!)

If you are still running on the pre-loaded OS I would also suggest a fresh reformat, ThinkVantage utilities are known to cause problems.

Finally, if you still experience problems its possible that the LCD cabling is loose, or another hardware part is defective. I'd consider sending it in for repair.

I think that between Imslimjim and Hakez I've narrowed down my problem. The flickering problem only occurs when I'm in multiple applications, and it stops immediately once I click out and reduce my number of simultaneous operations. And yes, I bought this T-60 with preloaded XP Service Pack 2 (What exactly is a service pack)? Let me get my hands on a hard copy of XP and see what happens.

    I’ll keep you posted.

I am having the same low power flicker of others with an X61. The link above are for Nvidia drivers and not the x3100. I tried to install the updated drivers from Intel but it wouldn't let me and Lenovo doesn't have any updated driver for the display. Very annoyed that a brand new computer has this problem.

As a follow-up question: just how safe are sealed XP, SP 2 programs from 'power sellers' on Ebay? I fear winding up with a Chinese program, which will be worthless as far as updates. Are there actually people out there who can sell a new version of XP for $135, instead of the normal $300 that everyone else charges?

I can't speak for the validity of an eBay auction, however the OEM price for XP Pro is right around $120-130 from Newegg and other stores that sell OEM copies. Just throw some cheap piece of hardware like a cable into your cart with the copy of XP and you've saved a boatload while getting the same genuine Windows license and software as the retail price. :)
