I'm not entirely sure whether this is a T61 issue or a Windows Vista issue, but I'll post this here nonetheless...

For the past few weeks, I've been hearing some weird background noise when using headphones through the T61's headphone jack (I'm using Vista Ultimate btw). The weird background noise that I'm hearing is actually the noise that I, myself, am producing. For instance, I am hearing every keyboard stroke, every swipe of the touchpad, etc through my headphones.

I checked my audio settings in control panel and everything seems to be in order. I disabled the microphone, but to no avail.

If anyone has any advice or input I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

have you tried using different headphones? this sounds like vibration issues in your current headphones, not relating to your computer, OS, or any drivers.....

it could be an issue with your headphone wire where some contact is being made resulting in phonics

I am having the same problem. I have disabled all audio input including microphones. The whirring of the fans and clicking of the hard drive actually gets amplified when you turn the volume up. This may be an issue of the audio devices not being shielded enough but in any case it degrades the performance of external speakers when at medium and high volumes.

Interesting, as I am a regular headphone user, and pay careful attention, as my previous Latitude C640 had lots of EM/RF noise when using the headphone jack.

I use a decent set of canalphones (UltimateEars Super.Fi) with my T61 to watch streaming TV shows or stream movies wirelessly from my server at home. I've had no issues so far. Have you tried more than one kind of headphones?

If it was buzzing or high pitches noises, I would blame the sound card or poor grounding. I've noticed this on the work desktops I'm using (Dell and Gateway).

If you use the mouse to drag windows around, you can hear a buzz and there is just general crackly noise.

My T61p has no such problem.

If it's an "organic" sound, like hard drive clicks, keystrikes, touching touchpad; I wouldn't blame the laptop. Probably the headphones. Canalphones transmit sound very well.
