Just out of curiosity, have any of y'all heard of someone using their ultrabay for storage? By storage, I mean holding screw drivers, flash drives etc.

Now that's one of the few innovative ThinkPad ideas I've come across.

By extension, if one installs a large-enough mSATA SSD for everything, both the main bay and the UltraBay can be used for "storage" storage: a screwdriver here, a small bag of white stuff there...

That wouldn't be very difficult if you have an Ultrabay hard drive adapter. Without the hard drive, it's essentially like a locked drawer. Just don't take it through airport security like that. You'd be asked a lot of questions and might have your system confiscated.

Update: I took the cover off my HDD caddy and found that the sides were hollow with struts for support. I filed one down and can keep a screw driver/small knife/flash drive/etc in there now :)

Pictures please? This is pretty hilarious, but an image or two to share would make it even more so. So much for Ultrabooks, the next wave of innovation is thicker laptops with more non-digital storage capacity, lol.

    That just sounds wrong :p

What exactly do you have in mind putting in there? I mean flash drives, ok.. but what do you need a screwdriver for on a laptop when you're on the go?

The screwdriver is necessary to get things from storage in the LCD bezel, under the DIMM door and under palmrest. Can store some beef jerky, toothpicks, a pair of socks maybe.

I'm surprised ExpressCard slot wasn't mentioned, plenty of chewing gum can fit in there.

Sorry, but this sounds ridiculous. Think about it, modifying the internals of your high end laptop so it carry a screw driver or usb stick. If you need a screw driver small enough to fit in your ultrabay it can also fit in your pant pockets or even your wallet. USB storage is now small enough to fit on a keyring, point being that it sounds very suspect that someone would really be wanting to use a Thinkpad ultrabay to store a screwdriver and usb stick, more like snow white candy powder.

you guys are going to find this hilarious, video/audio editors have been doing this for years, sometimes you need to keep a specialty interface cable or a USB dongle key ( solidworks etc ) not a USB data drive, with your laptop at all times. instead of losing it in the darn laptop bag we would keep them in an optical bay adaptor with a tiny piece of velcro from the dollar store. Ill post up a pic of mine this evening

Hey, mate, how do you spell laugh down under?

There is space under the keyboard and behind the screen. Heck, with mSATA SSD only, there is plenty of room in the main bay, too, maybe for a deck of cards.

On the serious note, yeah, sure.

Now you got me, I'm totally going to do this :)

With Lenovo using Displayport and nearly nobody else does, e.g. at work or University they barely have HDMI Monitors, I would carry an adaptor and never lose it.

Another advantage to the mac users always looking for their displayport to dvi adaptors ;) Happens all the time at my uni.

^^ The regular MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter doesn't fit my UltraBay caddy. :(

Wow, this is actually a really good idea! Now I've finally got a place to put my USB sticks, adapters and stuff like that.

I think I might even get one of those Ultrabay HDD adpaters now.
