I was using a program 'eraser' on my x61s, taking a long time, and I heard this noise coming apparently from the HDD, like little insect's sound, like, you know, sometimes in the summer you hear small insects's "voices" from the woods. It's not loud, but constant. Is it normal? Does the rotation of the HD normally cause such sound? I'm sorry I don't know how to describe the sound adequately enough for you to imagine...

What kind of sound is the HD supposed to make when writing on the HDD for a long time? Should it be audible?

Is it kind of like tiny tapping sounds?

Not tapping, but really like insects--at first I thought there was an insect on my window, or half-dead fly struggling, then I found the sound came from my laptop. After the program finished the task, the sound stopped. When I ran the program again, the sound immediately started again, so quite obvious it's the HDD is being written on, or rotating, but if it was loud enough for you to think it's an insect, is it normal?

You can download everest ultimate trail edition, use the system stress tool and stress your hard drive and see if the sound is reproduced. If you don't hear the sound it might just be how the "eraser" program access the disk that makes your hard drive make that noise.

What do you mean by stressing? Is it harmful to the HDD?

Well do you breathe harder than walking when you're running?
That's kind of the same concept with the hdd
    It shouldn't be harmful ;)
