I got a T61 in August and until recently, I had not had a chance to use the system's internal bluetooth adapter with a headset. Yesterday I tried using the built in adapter with two different headsets: the Motorola HS-850 and Samsung WEP410. Both headsets resulted in poor audio quality and range.

Compared to my previous external BT adapter, the Linksys USBBT100 V2 dongle, the T61's internal adapter's range is worse. The T61 only gets around 15-20 feet. In addition, the audio is plagued with crackles and pops even at close range.

The Linksys adapter has no such problems with the audio, works through walls and it's range is easily 10-20 meters indoors. I am used to walking into other rooms while on a Skype call and having the headset continue to function well.

I tried changing the driver to the "Microsoft Generic BT" and it has helped a little with the noise, but range is still poor. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this typical? I am thinking about having the BT module replaced, but if this kind of performance is typical, I don't want to bother with the downtime.

I wonder if the reason performance is sub-par is because of a lack of a physical antenna. Does anyone know if the T61 has a physical, internal antenna? I haven't cracked open the case, but there is no mention of it on the T61's parts diagram. The range on my friends iMac 24 inch is much better and I am sure they DO have a physical internal antenna from the online parts diagram. If there is no internal antenna in the T61, has anyone tried to add one?

Part of the reason I purchased a new computer was to get rid of all the extra stuff that was hanging off of my previous laptop and have everything contained in one machine. To me, the T61's Bluetooth performance is unacceptable and mars an otherwise superbe Laptop. If this kind of performance is typical, I want to figure out a work-around...any insight?

I am running 64 Bit Vista Home Premium.
