Do most of you use surge protector for your Thinkpad? Is AC adapter enough? Has anyone's laptop been damaged due to the lack of it?

IMHO, surge protectors are yet another nice way to make money...
A better protection/investment, IMHO, would be:
1. Backup drive/system
2. Extended warranty

Yes, a thunderstorm damaged a couple of ports on my switch as well as a NIC on my desktop.

I live in an old house, if there is lightning you can almost be sure the power will go out. Always used surge protectors on my computers... never had a problem.

I always get a surge protector just in case. And if I had the money, I would have an APC to protect my desktop also, in addition to a surge protector.
I've had a few routers get fried from lightning. -
Thanks. It's a kind of insurance that some people need more than others, seems, depending on where and when you use your laptops. Perhaps it's a good idea, when without a surge protector, to switch to battery from AC during thunder storms

Beside lightning, what else in everyday life can cause power surge? -
A server and a 500GB External Drive died on me due to a Thunderstorm.

Surge protector will shut off and not allow any electric to pass through to your laptop when there is a surge in power. Lightning and spikes from the power company can cause damage to your electronics.
Surge protector is just an extra precaution. Chances might be low that a lightning will hit your home, but would you want to take the chance? Surge protectors don't cost that much. A really good one can be purchased for $40.
Besides, it'll give you more outlets.
