I've always been a big proponent of the mSATA + HDD setup. It works very very well since you only pay for ssd space for what matters. I'm mostly streaming movies these days though so my need for large amounts of storage is mostly gone now, and I'm considering selling my Intel msata 80gb ssd and toshiba 750gb hdd.

Is there any disadvantage to having just a SSD? Since I don't really need the space anymore I'd like to switch to having only solid state storage since it seemingly makes more sense in a notebook. And it'll reduce weight marginally.

Has anyone here used the mSATA Intel, Intel 320 160gb and Intel X25-M? How much of a power consumption difference is there between these three? I'm also not sure whether to go for the Intel 320 or X25-M since the X25-M has a bit better random performance. It seems that maybe the X25-M consumes a bit more than the other two at idle though?

If your goal is to reduce weight, why not dump the hard drive and keep the mSATA. That'd probably weigh the least. I like having the second drive, but 80GB wouldn't be enough for me.

Since I don't need the extra space simplicity and reliability is the goal. Weight savings is a bonus. 80gb is not enough so the msata isn't an option.

If you can hold out, Samsung has produced 256GB mSATA drives... Unfortunately, they have not penetrated the retail channels yet.

I don't need 256gb, and I bet it'll cost a lot. Intel 160gb seems to be the best solution as far as I can see in terms of cost and what I'm going for.

Damn! I just ordered my x220 and was actually contemplating the same question! Could've swapped the 160gb (it was on special grrrr) for your msata combo! But yeh...choose the hdd...my bad! If you do decide to switch to the ssd, i'll be happy to purchase the msata off ya :D
