Hmm, do laptop components such as these tend to get cheaper or more expensive as time goes on?

One problem is since they just switched over to SATA drives there's not a lot of older drives laying around people are looking to sell. If you're just burning at the home or office, you might want to pick up an external or maybe you just want to borrow one to make the recovery discs.

Well, to make the discs I could probably find a workaround by making image files and burning them on my desktop. However, if I ever need to use those discs, the DVD ROM drive which came with the laptop probably won't be able to read the discs anyway because they'll be R or RW, unless I'm misunderstanding how it works between ROM drives and burned discs.

You may be. When I've had a ROM drive I just wrote it and the read it.

They should work. I tried doing the whole Virtual DVD burner thing and failed, maybe you might have better luck, I think someone else managed to do it. So basically I just nuked all of the partitions.

In case it helps anyone, the DVD burner on my T400 is labelled "H-L Data Storage Super Multi DVD Rewriter Model GSA-U20N (ALIK701)"

Most newer DVD-ROM drives can read ALL varieties of discs. This includes CDs, DVDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-R, DVD+R, and often DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

For example, the DVD/CD-RW combo drive on my T40 had no trouble reading DVD-R or DVD+R discs that I burned with my desktop burner.

If the ROM drive can read them then I should be fine.
