R61i, WXP Pro, appears to be working fine. It has all microsoft updates applied. For several months, I have not been able to get System Update to install updates. Tried it today, and found 3 critical updates, 8 recommended updates, and 9 optional updates. Upon selecting them, they will download, but then I get a message stating that they were not installed. I have tried them one at a time with no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You could always go to lenovo's website and download them from there then install them at your leisure. I have found the the system update utility from lenovo doesn't always work the best.

I'll give that a try, but that didn't work either a few months ago. Works perfectly on my other Thinkpad, an R61e

Do a search on windows installer. You may need to reload this service on your machine. Happened to me once.

I found software installer. Is that it? Trie to install it ...it has been replaced by System Update 3.14, which is the version of System Updated already present.

Try this as well... Just to confirm, is it hardware updates, or XP/Software updates that are not installing? -

If all else fails, this appears to be addressing your issue as well.
Good luck, sorry about the multiple posts but kept searching for you!
Hope we could help. -
Microsoft Updates install just fine. It is all the lenovo system updates that will not install, although they do download.

No problem with the multiple posts...keep em coming. I'm grateful for you efforts. Did install the latest software installer,3.14...no help. Im now going to install the windows installer, but maybe I shouldn't...the MS support site says it's for XP XP SP1 and XP SP2. I have XP SP3, which is not mentioned. Will I brick the system if I install it?
If I can't get this to work, I may simply restore to factory condition and reload my settings and programs. This is not my main unit. It's mainly used for light surfing and email by my wife. Don't tell her I said this. -
If you are planning on doing a restore then it couldn't hurt to try the windows installer. If it doesn't work or it causes problems just do a factory restore. One word of advice, before you get into doing too much make sure you have made recovery cds/dvds. That way if something were to mess up your recovery partition you will still be able to do the restore.

I have made recovery disks. I'll probably try the installer, but not now. Some day, when I've got a little time on my hands. I'm not prepared to deal with reinstallations right now if it doesn't work. Thanks to all.

I've found that the System Update utility pretty much sucks. It seems to have been derived from the IBM Update Connector which was also useless.
The best Lenovo update client was Software Installer, which they stopped supporting for some odd reason.
