Hi
I recently bought R61 and it had some hardware trouble with internal speakers. I was asked to send it to depot which I did. I found that they replaced its system board and my current problem is solved but now its failing some kind of thermal tests. Well this has got me shaken.
I read somewhere in this forum that when sent for hardware repair they put refurbished parts and not new ones. So I am presuming that they have replaced my system board with similar piece which has some problem with FAN or CPU speeds which is causing failure in thermal speeds.
Well I dont think I could fight with Lenovo guys to get a new system board as I cant afford to keep waiting.
So here is my concern: Should I buy a upgrade of warranty to say 3 years which would cost me some 150 bucks extra (I feel its too costly) to my current 1 year warranty?
What do legends suggest on this?
All responses appreciated
Thanks
Lalit

Lenovo/IBM will take care of it, just let them know. You can either take it to a local ibm approved shop or mail it in. Turn around is usually 5 to 7 days mail in and 2 to 4 days in the shop (my experience)
give 'em a call and see what you options are.
Keep in mind if you buy an upgraded warranty they will start it from the day you bought the laptop. So in effect if you buy a 3 year upgraded warranty at the very end of your 1 year, then you only get 2 years from the end of the 1st year.
In order words a 3 year upgraded warranty will NOT add to your 1st year. Its more like a 2 year "extension" that kicks in after your 1st year -
most manufacturers use refurbished parts. especially dell, usually not a problem but in your case might possibly be. I would assume that the processor heatsink could be a culprit. i always recommend extended warranties to my customers. 75% of the time they come in handy. patience is the key with any manufacturer, they will fix it as long as you wait. good luck.

You should get a warranty for as long as you NEED the machine to last.
I'd guess they probably mis-seated a cooler when they swapped the board. If that's the case, the repair might be able to be done locally if there's a nearby tech you can take it to (assuming you don't have onsite). -
Thanks for the responses.
Status of laptop: They are saying its under testing and has been given to higher Engineer to verify everything. It usually takes sometime to get the approval from Engineer.
I will probably take extended warranty once I get it back. I shouldnt be taking chances.
