Does anyone know first hand if the T500 is much smaller/lighter than a Dell D820?

I realize the spec's say it's lighter, but does anyone know if there's 'that' much difference between the two's size/desk footprint, bulkiness to carry, etc ...

I always thought my Dell D820 was a little bulky and heavy but I like the screen size, I'd love a 15" notebook in a MacBook Pro size, but no mac's for me ... I tried the Dell XPS 1550, it was a (poorly build, low quality) tank so I returned it.

I've also thought of saying the heck with it and trying a 13.3" Lenovo X301 or the LG P310 ...

I have a Dell D830 at my workplace (I think its the same as the D820 in terms of size and weight) and Lenovo T500 at home. Both are about the same size. I have not measured them in any way but I do think the Dell might be a slightly more bulky - but my opinion might not be as objective as you need it, because I like the T500 so much better :)

Thanks, how do you like the 15.4" screen? Could you get by with a 14.1 or 13.3" screen, I'm trying to decide if the size of the screen is worth trade off of size and wieght.

I also had a Dell Latitude D630 previously at my company as a work computer and some years ago I had a notebook with a 14" (4:3 not 16:10 wide like today) screen.

Size really depends on your preference and how you are going to use the notebook. I do mostly software development on the notebooks I use and I prefer the bigger size of the 15.4" screen, at least for my home computer. At work I mostly use an external 24" display, so screen size is not so much a factor - I was really fine with the D630 even when taking it away from my desk (the reason for switching to D830 had nothing to do with screen size)

If you want to carry it around a lot maybe you should check out the Lenovo T400? I myself am only familiar with it vaguely but many people have it here on the forums I am sure they can answer any questions you have.

And going back to your first question: I would take the T500 over the D830, not just because of weight or size but because I like the build of the T500, the quality, the support provided better than the Dell. For example when installing Vista 64 bit on the Dell finding all the drivers was a little bit painful. Most of them were ok on the Dell website, but some I had to hunt down. Lenovo was superb in this matter as well. I can highly recommend going with Lenovo :)

thanks very much, I'm going to try the T500, I'm going from a 13.3" screen so it will be a change for sure, but larger screen and font = easier on the eyes :)
