I am looking at ordering a new laptop. I will be ordering 2, one for my mother and one for me. I am a college student, who will use it for school work, internet, etc. My mom will be using it for mostly the same thing. I was wondering if there was any reason why not to get a R as they seem cheaper then the T. Any advice/suggestion on which model is best for the money, looking at ordering this weekend. Thanks!

R61 14.1" widescreen seems to offer alot for the money however if you have to have the FX 570m with the powerful GPU for gaming then I would recommend getting a T61p 15.4" widescreen.

I don't think the R series has the full magnesium roll cage.

The R61 14.1" Widescreen does have it. It also has a high quality finish like the T series. Only the 14.1" R61 Widescreen.

ditto what darylo said.. i was stuck in the same situation you are.. i went for a r61.. my wife is pregnant with our first child.. so i knew she would prob be using it more then me.. i just got the 15.4 r61... if i was just for me.. i prob would just get the r61 14" just for the smaller size and roll cage.. if i was a student and had to keep my thinkpad with me all the time in a backpack or bag.. i'd prob spend the extra $150-200 and get a t61..

I don't think there is diff between the the R and the T to be honest, I was in the same boat and I decided to check both of them myself, so I went to a local store that sells refurbs and they had both..... I have to tell you that to me they look exactly the same, the weight is the same, I lefted both of them to see if the R is heavier and it was not, the width of the R maybe a tad and mean tad more and that's about it and you can't even notice it. The finish is the same as far as the top cover and around the Keyboard.

The differences between the 14.1" WS R and T are minimal. The 14.1" R has roll cage just like the T. The R is 0.1" thicker and a little heavier but not by much. However the differences between 15.4" WS R and T are more substantial. IMO, if you want 14.1", get the R. Get the T if you want 15.4".

I feel R61 and T61 are almost the same.
I'm using T61 but if I need a new notebook, I'll go to a R61 to save some bucks.
