The W series looks like overkill for me, but I was wondering if I might be missing something....

I know what you are talking about. I want some mobility and don't want the power suck of a quad core. I'd love to be able to get a Thinkpad with a dual core + 880 graphics. I feel that's a more middle of the road balance. The nvs3100 is ridiculous. My T61p is faster, but my only option to get a Thinkpad with newer graphics is to go W series with it's 2 hours of battery life. It's frustrating.

I went with a W700 cause it's really the only ThinkPad (other than my perfect and beloved T61p) that can truly game, and i can upgrade the GPU quite a bit, perhaps to a GTS 250M even if i wanted. If the T61p wasn't demolished, and the GPU problem, it would be essentially the best balance between a good screen, performance, and portability, in fact (resolution wise) it was a great screen.

Is that mainly what the W series brings to the table, better graphic? I am not a gamer, so that is not much of an issue. Battery life is a much bigger deal to me.

Shrug, for consumers, yes it would seem so. However it also brings to the table a brilliantly designed cooling system, with plenty of room to futureproof seeing as it'll take any mobile Core 2 Quad, and well within most performance MXM GPU heat constraints... up to the heat of a GTX 280M, so that's one of the reasons i got it. It also brings to the table IMO better durability, i have to say, my W700 is magnificently built, even better so than my T61p, the lid is sturdier, keyboard's the same as my T61p, and the palmrests are completely flex free. Amazing. It's just built for photographers and professional users in mind. The W700 also has a couple different display outputs, Dual link DVI, Displayport, and the standard VGA.

There is no 17" T series equivalent. For 14" and 15" models, the T and W models are identical externally with differences only in CPU and GPU choices, plus on the W series, you have the option for 4 memory slots and USB 3.0.
-
It sounds like you'd be better off with the T series!

Most users would find the T-series much better value and with few downsides. The W is for those who really need the fastest cpu, the very best possible gpu, the very best screen options, and the possibility of a huge amount of ram. i.e for decidedly "power" users, and for those who are prepared to pay a lot more for the very best (or are using other people's money).
As for the 17" monster, that is a totally different issue. There is no 17" T. -

It was a fluke, didn't i tell you about this? Or are you pulling my plonker
but yeah they did because i was sort of relieved that i could buy a generation that didn't have that stupid GPU problem, that problem was really stressing sometimes, i had gotten what i thought were symptoms of GPU failure, and played around with different approximations of how long i'd be able to keep the T61p before it failed, i did love the T61p, it was IMO the peak of the T series, but i am very happy with my W700, it has IMO even better build quality than the T61p did, especially palmrests, and its a 17"... I also got a tremendous deal, 1200+40 shipping+30 bucks for a webcam upgrade (USD) off of eBay, for a sealed, brand new W700 in box, unopened. Extremely glad to get it for that price considering the config would have been at least 3500 from Lenovo.

yes i knew about the car driven over your laptop when the guy was trying to park his car. Obviously, i was just joking when i stated 'did you a favour.....'
1200 dollars is extremely cheap... good things do come out of bad events...
maybe you should change your avatar to a W700 now, given that your T61p has RIP.
T v. W Series?
