Does the T-61 come with a replacement screw kit so if you decide to open it up and put in more RAM can replace the screws with new ones? The owner's manual online says that the screws on the bottom have carbon coating and are only supposed to be used once.

I'm also wondering why the hardware manual says that you need new screws everytime you remove them? Why wouldn't the same screw work just fine?

Just from experience, I've noticed that you don't see a lot of common sense in owners manuals. Every other page is a warning to never eat the parts, or suffocate yourself with the device.

But I've never read the T61 manual.

I'm not sure whether it's a "screw kit," but my T61 came with two extra screws. I was wondering what those were for...

Only two? If you take off the palm rest cover to upgrade ram you need to take out four screws.

Maybe it's an issue of the heads being coated, and using a metal tipped screwdriver destroying the finish that they consider destructive?

You can always place a layer of plastic in-between to protect the finish.

That seems a little far fetched. Throwing out a screw and replacing it just because the black finish might be messed up by a screw driver? That's more beauty conscious than a girl on prom night. You could be right, but that seems a little too superficial. I was thinking maybe the threads are coated for a tighter fit or something?

I don't think Lenovo would allow anyone to make a "screw kit." They love to do the "screwing" themselves!

Well, are the screw wells made of the same material, or just some standard metal? That might shed light on that.

It not a carbon coating, but a nylon coating that works to bind the threads to prevent the screw from loosening during normal or abnormal handling. I have removed the screws probably 20 times from my T60 without any issues, once or twice would be perfectly fine.

I believe the replacement screw kit costs between 20-30 bucks, and is a baggie with like all the screws used to assemble the entire notebook.

Well, thanks for all the responses, although only one actually addressed kind of addressed the question. I just wanted to know if your T61 came with the screw kit. For everyone else, yes the "screw kit" does exist and yes the screws are supposedly nylon coated to fit better. The kit is listed on page 142 of the Hardware Maintenance manual that for the T61 that can be downloaded in pdf format from lenovo.com. It actually has a part number for the kit too: 41w4504 Maybe Lenovo should send everyone who has been waiting over a month for their T61's one of these kits. :D
