    Hi everyone,

Which is between Lenovo’s ThinkPad T400 and X200 is suitable for most engineering application, that is, well performing for CAD and calculation?

Also, what is the difference between IdeaPad and ThinkPad?

If you are an engineer, which one do you prefer? IdeaPad or ThinkPad?

Thank you very much in advance

If you are working in CAD you will probably need a discrete graphics card. Ideally one that is supported by your application of choice. This rules out the x200, and possibly the T400 as well due to the integrated and gaming oriented graphics respectively. You may want to consider a w500 Thinkpad because of the FireGL card/drivers that are aimed towards CAD applications. For basic calculations (Excel, Mathematica, Stata, etc.) almost any computer will do, although more speed/cores is preferred.

IdeaPads are Lenovo's house brand. They tend to be consumer focused and only of moderate quality. Thinkpad's are the premium brand that Lenovo bought from IBM in order to enhance its brand image in the US. They are much better built, survive abuse, matte screens, and have superior keyboards/input devices. Engineers and business people tend to prefer Thinkpads or similar grade machines from Dell/HP (Latitude/Elitebook) over Ideapads due to their design, professional graphics options, and durability.
