When using my Thinkpad at home I attach an external [no name] mouse with a scroll wheel.
When I first got this notebook I "seem to recall" that the scroll wheel worked to move the cursor up and down a web page.
My reason for buying this notebook was to split the 20gig hard drive with a partition and install a Linux OS and reinstall Win98SE.
I have installed Red Hat 8.0 and Win98SE and they are both "up and running". All the Thinkpad features seem to be reinstalled and "Thinkpad Configuration" feature shows all "green lights".
MY PROBLEM IS: The scroll wheel is "inop" on the optical/corded mouse in BOTH Windows & Linux so it seems to be a hardware problem rather then an OS problem. I tried another mouse, just to eliminate that possibility.
Am I just imagining that the scroll wheel "worked" when I first got this notebook OR is there "some Thinkpad setting" that I need to fix ??

You probably just have the wrong mouse driver installed. Go to the manufacturer website and get the latest mouse driver and update them. You may then have to tweak some of the settings in the mouse section of the control panel.
