I finally had a chance to get pics of all 3 of them:

    http://tel3deal.com/pics/T61/

They are the last 5 pics.

Seems like the only reason the T61 is thicker than both t23 and t43 is the footers they put on the bottom to give it better air circulation.

Neat pictures. Love how the look and feel of the Thinkpad has pretty much remained unchanged, even with the widescreen models.

Why did you decide to buy the T61 widescreen? Didn't you order a SXGA+ T61 before?

Well i returned the SXGA+ because of the build quality and the BSOD problem that it had.

I decided to get the wide one because it was 30% less in price... but the screen sucks big time (deal breaker for me) The finish on this one isn't much better in fact i think theres a design flaw in the position of the right front footer of the laptop. Whenever i press the down button i get a very loud clicking noise from the plastic flexing.

All in all though if the screen wasn't this bad i would've kept it. Very robust performance.

This one doesn't have the problem with the wireless connection not re-establishing after sleep or hibrenation like the other one did (both intel AGN cards)

There's also a rattle noise coming from the right speaker when you put the volume high.

Oh and definitly getting the 160gb 5400rpm is a better choice than the 100gb 7200. No question in my mind after using both.

1/2 the power consumption and maybe 10% reduction in speed.

But the real benefit is less heat on the palm rest and much less noise, in fact i can harly hear it.

the T61's frame is so thick =[...

Somehow I wish sometimes that I had bought a T60p FlexView instead of a T60 WS... superior screens have always intrigued me. My friend has one and the viewing angles are just awesome.

I believe the viewing angles of the Flexviews are overrated.
They have similar narrow full-brightness viewing angles as the non-Flexview screens.

Where did you get the 1/2 power consumption figure?
And my 100GB 7200 rpm Seagate was whisper quiet also.

Lowspeed, you said the bad screen was a deal breaker. Are you returning it? What are you getting instead?

well i just got my parents an acer : http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/howToGetItTab.do?c=1&oid=185212&userClick=&showMoreStores=true

Its still in the box, i won't see them until next week. If i like it i might keep that and get them something else.

It doesn't have everything i wanted... but at $499, you can't get it all.

I'm definitly returning the T61... there's really no words to describe how bad that LCD is, you have to see it in person.

Haha, taking the 15% restocking fee or trying to get out of it? If anything, tell Lenovo the screen causes discomfort, which you mentioned in another thread. They'd have no choice there.
