So I finally (after a few months of searching, going back and forth over what I wanted and really needed in a laptop..) bought a used T23. Need to add wireless to it, now.
So, my question is: can I swap out the internal modem card (which I'll never use) and put in a wifi card in it's place?
Or am I better off going with a PC card or USB adaptor?

I dont think wireless was an option on that laptop and it does not contain antennas for the wireless card. Range would be awful without internal antennas and trying to add them yourself would be too much work. If by some chance it does have antennas you would need to get the IBM option wireless card because you be hit or miss with any other. Most older and even some newer are very touchy on the card. A friend bought a INTEL 2200 card from dell and It would not work in his R50, so he had to buy the IBM version of the card to work. Long story short you would be better off getting a PCMCIA card due to the fact that the T23 does not have usb2.0 ports and you would get better throughput using a pcmcia card. Im not sure if you have the ethernet/modem or just the modem card but I would suggest picking up the ethernet/modem card in case you need to plug into a wired network.

Yeah, you don't have internal antennas, so it won't work. Just buy a slim PCMCIA card and you'll do just fine.

That's what I figured. It was pointed out to me that the PCI slot might be an option, but I was doubtful about it.. you've confirmed my doubts :->
Edit: What's the bandwidth on the PC card slot? IE. would it be a waste of money (ie. can't handle the speed) to get a wireless G card? -
Bandwidth is 133MB/s, or 1064Mb/s. Wireless-G is only 54Mb/s, best case scenario.
T23 mini PCI slot..
