Hey folks, an associate of mine has a T40 and he just bought a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM. He says that the machine is either getting a BSoD or freezing into the boot sequence with the new SODIMM installed. He says that he was able to successfully run a memory test on said SODIMM, so the problem doesn't seem to be with the memory itself.

Anyone more knowledgeable about ThinkPads have any suggestions? I know that some old machines like this are just picky about memory, but maybe there's some sort of secret to get this to work?

    TIA

None of the T4x machines I've seen have been particularly finicky about the memory. The T2x and older are a different story. Do you have another stick you can try and does it still work with the old memory? Maybe you try them one at a time. Could be a bad slot. If you were to exchange the stick and it still failed you might be onto something.

My old T40 shipped with a single 512MB DIMM and I added another 512MB at a later date. No problems to report with that setup, but 1GB DIMMs could be a different story (though it should work fine).

If it was a bad slot, would the stick still pass a memtest while it was in said slot? I'm not sure if he's running a single stick or mismatched sticks, but I'll ask. Thanks for the input.

EDIT: Now that I think about, regardless of the memory configuration, if it passes memory testing, shouldn't it work in Windows as well? What would cause the configuration to pass memory testing but BSoD and freeze in Windows?
