    Advice appreciated.

I replaced the fan on my T40 since it was just about to die (bearings worn out, sounded like a gravel truck) - just when I was about to transfer all my files to my new T61.

With the new fan in place (used one that is) the T40 boots up, everything runs fine - and then it simply shuts down within 5 minutes or so.

Info: The original fan was FRU Fan Long 13N5442. The used replacement is FRU Fan GL 13N5347. Could this have an impact (ordered from ThermalFX and I assume they matched this properly)? Also, this happend while docked and I am not sure if this could have an impact.

Since the T40 starts up fineand applications work I do not think I damaged anything.

    Thanks.

I'm not really sure. But my guess is, it's probably overheating and then shutting down, the fan might not be running efficiently. Would it be possible that the fan was installed upside down and instead of cooling, it's actually blowing in heat?

The replacement is situated identically - there's no other way to put it in.

Did you call Lenovo to get the proper FRU for your system or did you get it off the part? Some machines can have 6 fans to choose from; Fan Long, Fan Short, Fan Long Discrete, Fan thermal sensor, etc.

I'd agree with the OP, call Lenovo directly with the FRU of the old fan and ask them what fan they suggest to replace it.

If they suggest the same fan you currently have, explain your problem briefly and see if they have any ideas.

Beside of making sure that this FRU is suitable for your laptop, you should also:

    1. Make sure that the fan is spinning properly, either something is obstructing the fan or some worn out fans might be spinning but just not fast enough, you can use tools such as Thinkpad fan control to check the fan speed (and also check the temperature reading on the different sensors to identify the overheating component, if this is not the cpu).
    2. Make sure that you applied the thermal paste / pad properly.

Thanks. I applied some silver thermal compound. Had just used the old one on the CPU and that apparently did not work. Also downloaded the fan control app. CPU temperature is holding steady at ~ 50 C. Thanks.

It seems I will have to go through the same procedure of replacing the fan - is there any instruction/ diagram available online how to open up T40 so you get to the processor/ fan? Is it just "remove everything" kind of deal?
    Thanks!
