Does anyone else get a beeping sound coming from their T400? I hear THREE consecutive beeps (very faint) every 5 seconds or so. My room is completely silent though and I can hear everything, including the hard drive. Just wondering if anyone knows what this sound is?

    *sigh*

    i was just kidding...

is the laptop heating up? it can be the harddisk... btw what kinda beeps are they? Do they sound like proper beeps or really faint sounds which _can_ be beeps?

    Hello rxblitzrx,

I think there is a different answer to your question.

Where does it come from? Is it where the F1 button is seated.

Then your TP will suffer from so called cpu whine, most it comes up, when your
    TP is running on battery.

You can disable it by go into Bios and disable speedstepping of your cpu.

    kind regards

Beep is located on the right side, near the optical drive. I'd say near the corner of the optical drive and the LCD.

Strange, it doesn´t seem either a cpu whine nor a coil problem or your hdd.

What is located there, your usb connections?
Are you using an external mouse?

USB connection is located there. It makes the sound, even without a mouse connected

    Hmmm,

your are experiencing a total new sort of problem.
What´s up, when you force your system to maximum power, through changing
    your power profile to maximum?

it seems like a capacitor. They make such irritating noises whilst charging / discharging. You'll find the same kind of noise emanating from a cheap chinese battery charger.

it sounds like it might be the battery. i'll have to check that later tonight. even if it is, it's not audible in my normal user environments. overall, not a major issue. just curious if anyone else is having this issue.

I've heard those kind of squeeky beeps before. In my case it was the faulty hard drive.

WOH. ok, if it's the hard drive then i can't ignore that. i'm still at the coffee shop so I'll check the noise again when I get home.

yeah, the hard drive IS located under the right palm rest. could be possible.

If you have old drive try swapping it to see if you still get the sound. I am sure squeeky beeps are produced by hdd.

mmmm.... i've heard several squeaky beeps produced by hard drives.... not completely convinced that this one is coming from the HD. i'm thinking more battery, but yet again... i'm still at the coffee shop. will update later.

I understand this thread is old, but if anybody else is wondering...
I have the same squeaky sound, and it's only present when the battery is charging. If I unplug, the noise goes away. It sure is annoying, but luckily I can only hear it if the environment is completely noise free.

    Hi

I just installed a new replacement warranty hard drive and have what seems to be a similar problem. It sometimes beeps frequently (2-3 per second) but right now it's constant. I took out the battery while plugged in and that didn't solve it. I have reset the hard drive many times but that didn't stop it either.

I had posted another thread with some other issues too, but thought I'd also document it here as well.

I got the exact same "problem".

Running on AC - not charging, at 100% - maximum power profile. I havent been able to find the source of this, but it's truly annoying when being in a quiet room.

I expect the harddrive to be the culprit, it could have something to do with the seekheads inside it. I got a HITACHI HTS543232L9SA00 in my T400.

I've measured it now, and every 65. seconds - 3 very silent beeps will emerge from somewhere inside the laptop.

I've disabled the 'cpu deeper sleep' in my power profile when running on AC, so it cant be cpu whine.

    Any clues?

sorry for the bump, but I may have a solution. I disabled power management under the BIOS and that seem to work. I ain't exactly if I had the problem before, but I did only notice it after changing the keyboard. So if you are experiencing the problem, did you previously taken apart the laptop?

Under disabled power management, startup does make the fan go off for a small bit but after 10-15 minutes (I have 1 GB of ram so it takes awhile for startup) after seems to be going smooth.

Where exactly in the BIOS is this?

Yes, I had the palmrest removed to check the ram, not sure if the faint beeping started after that.
