This thread is for those interested in installing Windows XP from scratch. Please post your questions here.

I'm going to take a real risk here and try to do a small version of what our moderator Arkit3kt did for the T61. The information here isn't complete, but it lists updates that the IBM site has so far. I will not be updating this on a regular basis since I don't have the time, but it will get some of you started.

THE FLOW OF THIS GUIDE WAS COPIED FROM ARKIT3KT'S WINDOWS XP CLEAN INSTALLATION THREAD.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    Windows XP Installation Instructions

    F1 = BIOS Menu
Restart after each installation, even if it doesn’t tell you to.

    Installation Steps:
    1. Change BIOS
..........a. Config > Serial ATA (SATA) > Set AHCI to Compatibility
    ..........b. Hit Esc
    ..........c. Hit Esc again
..........d. Startup > Boot > Move ATAPI CD0 to the top spot (1)
..........e. Hit F10 to save and exit. The computer restarts

    2. Install Windows

    3. Take CD out

    4. Intel INF Chipset
    ..........a. Auto-install

    5. Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver
    ..........a. Unzip to C:\Drivers\Win\IMSM
    ..........b. Double-click install.cmd
..........c. Restart computer and enter BIOS
....................i. Config > Serial ATA (SATA) > Set AHCI to AHCI
....................ii. Hit Esc  Hit Esc again
....................iii. Startup > Boot > Move ATAPI CD0 to the second spot (2)
..............................1. Hit F10 to save and exit. The computer restarts
    ..........d. Install new device drivers
    ..........e. Computer will restart

    6. ACPI Power Management
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\IBMPM\Setup.exe

    7. Video Drivers
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\Display\Setup.exe

    8. Audio Drivers

    8.1 PCI Simple Communications Controller

    9. UltraNav Driver
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\Unav\Setup.exe

    10. UltraNav Utility
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\UnavUtil\Setup.exe

    11. Hotkey Driver (on screen display only)
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\Hotkey\Setup.exe

    12. Atmel TPM
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\Win\TPM\Setup.exe

    13. Intel PRO/1000 LAN Adapter
..........a. Use Device Manager > Ethernet Controller
    ..........b. Drivers > Update Driver > C:\Drivers\Win\Ethernet\Pro1000\Win32

    14. Wireless Drivers

    15. Thinkvantage Power Manager
    ..........a. C:\Drivers\W2K\PWRMGR\Setup.exe

    16. Turn on Clear Type

    QUESTIONS:

    1. What are the 3 partitions for??

    2. Can I reformat the D:\[preload] partition, keeping the other two... and still be able to do a "recovery" to brand-new factory image??

I've learned about a lot of this over the past week with my bunk recovery from Lenovo. The S: partition houses the software that runs when you press the blue ThinkVantage Button. The Q:\ partition holds the original hard drive images, plus a couple of installs for MS Office, Roxio, etc. If you click on the Q drive and build the recovery media, it'll create a boot CD and a couple of DVDs that will allow you to restore your computer (you can also get these from Lenovo).

If you don't care about the ThinkVantage button, or the builtin system restore, then it's fine to remove these two partitions (create the backup just in case). Personally, I think it's a waste to have a button and that much harddisk space assigned to something that you most likely wont have to do after the system is setup up. And, if you do, you can just pop a CD in to boot into the ThinkVantage recovery software and restore the drives from your DVD images.

(Also, you don't have to use the Lenovo software for drive imaging. I went with Acronis because it was so cheap at NewEgg, and I don't want to rely on Lenovo for anything, especially after I was responsible for recovering my own system).

How do I get the fingerprint reader to log-in with Windows XP? I don't see any option for it (only password protection).

I fully reformatted my HDD wiping all partitions/volumes.

Using Windows, I repartitioned the disk to my pleasure and everything works fine, except bluetooth.

If I were you, I would forget about Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery CDs and partitions, they don't work a lot of time and they just take up space.

    it may be the modem

    or sound card

    or multiple items;

have you followed the CLEAN XP GUIDE by Arkit3ct and are left with one yellow hardware?

I don't have bluetooth, fingerprint reader, camera. I got a very barebones systems to minimize issues. I never used those features on my T61

Clean installs take a lot less time too =)

    nice guide OP.
I don't have any yellow marks in my windows xp install.

It could be Intel SATA / AHCI controller.

The PCI Simple Communications Controller is related to Intel's Active Management Technology, fellas. Get the necessary drivers here.

I only installed the MEI (second listed driver) and that took care of things. Don't know what I would need the other driver for...does anyone else know? Hope that helps others!

Potstickr: I don't see where to download the drivers for the PCI Simple Communications Controller.

Can you relink or explain a little?

That's weird, I see what you mean...it worked before when I tested it...regardless, on the main Lenovo driver page (after listing your model, os, etc.), use the Refine Results drop-down and select "Advanced Systems Management"... for my 7417-CTO model, it provides the following two options. Installing just the Management Engine Interface driver (first one below) fixed my PCI Simple Comm Controller issue, I don't know what the second one does or will do.

Now I am looking for the bluetooth and fingerprint drivers. Any idea?

Found them Lenovo Japan website has all the drivers for XP yet the english version doesn't have it? Weird. Some of the site is in english so use Firefox ctrl f to find what you need.

    Lenovo Japan: http://www-06.ibm.com/jp/domino04/pc/support/Sylphd03.nsf/jtechinfo/SYJ0-014D288

Now I have 3 "base system device" entries in Device manager and i have no clue what they go to. You know anything about that?

Man That japan site rocks. I should quit asking questions but maybe it will help someone else? The Base System Device (s) ended up being the Ricoh card reader. You can also download it from the japan lenovo website.

I tried to do a clean install of XP pro on my t400 (7417CTO, no finger print reader, no bluetooth) but cannot install the drivers for the sound card and the modem. I got two unrecognized devices in the Device Manager. I've installed the PCI driver (Intel AMT 4.0) mentioned in this post but that doesnt work...

I got the msg "Driver installation failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver" when installing the audio and the modem drivers...

    Any idea??? Thx!!

hey, did you get your driver issue figured out? i had the same exact problem. the reason you are having it is this:
when you run the lenovo file, it puts the files on your hard drive, then you have to go and execute the installation. you have to install the modem device DRIVER first, then install the driver. weird, huh?

    so, for the audio, for instance, you have to go to;
    c:\drivers\win\audio\xp32

then you first run the UIU32 file (device install)
    next, run the setup file.

this kind of issue happened with a couple things. make sure you look for the device, and install that first. then you will not get the 'device not found' message anymore.

    woot!

I have fixed my above problem but now have another issue. Upon start up, a dialog box pops up telling me that it has found new hardware, specifically a PCI device. To my knowledge everything is accounted for and it makes no mention of an extra device in the device manager. Any ideas?

rxblitzrx, I have downloaded and installed every driver necessary and the computer is seemingly running well. I still have 2 questions:
    1. Device Manager does not show any unknown devices but upon every bootup, "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up stating that a PCI Device was found. Do you know what this is?
    2. Is it cool that there is 2 power management icons running? I have one running in the system tray and another (gray and green?) running next to it.

Other than that, this install appears to be running smoothly. Thanks

I need some help here guys. I installed the Windows XP before I had the luxury of reading this thread and realised that I missed out the TPM and Matrix driver part.. and then I installed the Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. Now I'm being rejected from installing TPM and Matrix driver.. The TPM installer from Atmel states that I'm stuck at PrivacyIconClient but I think I already have that as its stated in my startup list. The Matrix driver says that my version of service pack is wrong.. does it mean that this is included in SP3?

In the Device Manager, I do not see any hardway conflict but at the same time could not locate the TPM chip either. Does that mean I cannot enable AHCI and have my TPM chip too?

    Thanks for reading!!

I have this same issue... haven't figured it out yet.

I think this is fine. You're seeing the Windows power manager in the system tray, and the Lenovo power manager to the left (it's grey and green and looks like a crayon drawing of a AA battery!).

Hi, I'm looking for some information on switchable graphics. I have both the discrete and integrated graphics and I currently have done a clean format of the computer and it's running on vista ultimate.

When installing the drivers, does it follow the same steps as if you were installing on vista? Meaning, do you set it to discrete in bios, then install the drivers, do a few reboots, then switch it to integrated and have it install the drivers for you? I know the drivers provided for you have both the integrated and discrete built in, I'm just wondering how you go about installing it.

    Thanks,
    OPish

So I ended up just formatting and working it out as I went along. I basically used Modded 8.11 ATI drivers for my discrete card and the normal lenovo drivers for the integrated. I disabled discovery in bios and just set up the display depending on what I need.

P.S. I went from Vista Ultimate x64 to XP Pro 32. My wattage went from 11-13 in vista to 6-9 in XP........ I gained over an hour of battery life (wifi ON, LED monitor, 40% brightness); I'm near 7 hours on a 6cell. The system also feels insanely faster!

    XP FTW

P.S.S. I also found out what the missing PCI controller is! for those people that have the problem need to go into device manager --> Windows + Pause/break, go to the "?" PCI device and right click it and do update driver. Point the update to the Matrix Storage Driver C:\Drivers\Win\IMSM for those who extracted to C: drive. It should work and go away after that!

    Hope that helps!

    GL,
    OPish

I have a clean install of XP SP3 on T400 with switchable graphics. Everything seems to be working fine but I have four devices in device manager that show as missing.

Base System Device on PCI Slot 7 (PCI bus 21, device 0, function 4)
Base System Device on PCI Slot 7 (PCI bus 21, device 0, function 3)
Base System Device on PCI Slot 7 (PCI bus 21, device 0, function 5)

So what are the three "Base System Devices"?
