    T400 users:
Have you noticed a squeaking sound when you open/close the lid of your laptop?

I previously noticed that whenever I open the lid more than 45 degrees and try to close it, it would make a squeaking sound (sounds like someone opening a door slowly).

I sent it in for repair and they tightened the left hinge, but obviously that wasn't the problem.

So, I'd sent it back in (it was supposed to be escalated). The technician replaced the LCD cable and explained that its the expansion and contractions of this LCD cable that is causing the noise. He said he would replace it, but there is no guarantee that it would actually fix the issue.

I received my T400 today, but was disappointed to find that after 2 attempts, they are unable to fix the issue, in fact it's even worst now - anyone else in the same boat ?

    Thanks....

Nope, but does anyone get this buzzing sound from the AC adapter? the big black thing hums very quietly even when you unplug it, it does it for the next 5 seconds

I have a different Lenovo model but get the same buzzing sound which can only be heard when I put my ear next to it. I guess it is normal so long as its temperature doesn't go beyond warm or keep rising.

Thanks for the response! It just randomly squeaks, and there is no such pattern really for me. Sometimes it's there and other times its not. I am more annoyed than worried at this point and this is the #1 reason for getting a Thinkpad - no squeaks, flex, strong hinges, cooling, etc.

Any other users out there ? Just wondering if it's worth returning this and getting a new one. No point if there are lot of bad apples! :(

I get a squeak too when opening my lid. I can't tell where it is coming from, but it is most audible when i slightly move the lid back and forth.

Yes, once lid is opened 90 degrees or more and I try to move it a little, I hear a squeak, but I noticed that it goes away with subsequence small moves. But once completely closed, I hear the squeaking coming back again....arrh, this is annoying.

Any other users, please? Need to decide whether this one goes back or not.

lol, googling WD-40 looks like it some sort of a lubricating spray - has anyone done this before? The technician advised that it might be the LCD cable contraction/expansion that might is causing this noise, just wondering how spraying the hinges will help? Any similar problems before that went away by spraying the hinges ?

If it is the hinge, WD-40 should take care of it. Looking at the size of these hinges it shouldn't take much at all, just the smallest amount. WD-40 could be a conductor so I would be careful though.

I was just kidding. Please do not spray grease on your T400. Whatever is squeaking will eventually wear down or break in, and cease making noise (hopefully). My M1330 had a squeak that magically went away.

don't spray your hinges. it is the lcd cable that is causing the squeak.

i have the same squeak and it doesn't bother me. it is caused by the lcd cable moving a bit when you open the lid.

when i open my lid fast, it squeaks a bit, but it really doesn't concern me. when i open it slower- no squeak. i don't think it's anything to get excited about. as time goes by, the lcd cable will likely become a bit more pliable, and the 'problem' might just go away completely.

so- if you can handle opening that lid a bit slower, your squeak should magically disappear.
