Would splitting the RAM to fill both banks be faster? (2GB + 2GB vs. 4GB + empty)

Ie. is the motherboard dual channel?

In a discernible way? Probably not.

The most noticeable difference would be in your wallet.

A 4GB stick of DDR3 RAM is definitely not worth the money, so go for 2GB + 2GB. Performance-wise, there will be little difference.

2+2GB RAM setup gives faster dual-channel X4500 performance, since it can interleave data. It would be crazy to go for a 1x4GB stick, as that's about 65% of the dual-channel performance setup AND costs more.

I got a lenovo T400 DDR3 1066 CAS 7 ram and a Crucial ram with the same specs, would there be dual channeling?

If only one slot is filled then its single channel.

If both slots are filled with equal sized sticks then it will run on symmetrical dual channel. eg. 2+2gb

If both slots are filled with uneven sized sticks then it will run on asymmetrical dual channel. eg 2+4gb

No as long as its a brand you've heard off.

No, it does not have to be the same brand for dual channel mode. Just the same specs.

Next time, if you have questions (especially if it's multiple questions about the same thing), make your own thread instead of resurrecting a month-old thread - it's just forum etiquette.
