    Hi,
I've got a T400 that is working great. Every time I boot it, it makes one short beep, telling me that everything is going well. However, this beep is very annoying and makes powering the laptop in a public place a very unpleasant experience. I've looked through the BIOS and disabled all beeps and alarms, but the startup beep persists. What am I missing ? Is it possible to disable this beep ?

    Thanks,
    Rognon

Its in the power manager. Right click on battery icon launch power manager go to global power settings. Here's the screenshot.

Is there a way to change this setting outside the OS ? The problem is that I whipped my HD and installed Linux. I don't want to recover to factory settings just to change this setting...

You can change it in BIOS. Press F1 during bootup and you will see display option where you can select Integrated or Dedicated graphics.

I don't understand. What does integrated or discrete graphics have to do with power management beeps ? I've looked in the "Display" section of the BIOS but can't see anything relevant.

oops sorry, I posted my reply in wrong thread...
regarding your issue, did you check if Lenovo offers power manager for linux? Because you can't disable it in BIOS as far as I know.

Since this beep occurs before the OS actually boots, shouldn't there be a way to disable it outside the OS ?
And what if I restore my laptop to factory defaults, disable the annoying beep and then wipe out Vista, would the beep come back ?

There's an option in the bios... I had to turn the annoying beeps off. Forgot where it was though.

I've made an extra partition, installed windows and followed your instruction Parijat. It worked. Thanks.
Having access to a windows installation can always be handy anyway...

If you find where this option is hiding, I'd be interested in knowing.

good you got it working. I am back home now, and tried to find that option in bios. Its there.

    Reboot, press F1 goto

Config> Beep and Alarm> Power Control Beep

    and set it to

    Disabled.

lol. How have I missed that ? :)

Now, it seems that my beeping problem is not solved after all...
Parijat, I had already disable the option you pointed out. I also realized that the beep comes back every time I change an option in the BIOS and goes away when I boot into windows. This must be because I disabled it in the Power Management application. I'm using winXP by the way (and Arch Linux as my primary OS)

I find this behaviour to be pretty strange...

That's weird, I haven't installed Ubuntu on my T400 yet, I'll see how it goes on mine.

Well it seems that no matter what I do, the beep wont go away now... And I can't see what I could have done that would have triggered this.

I've just discovered something : the mute button on the keyboard mutes the PC speakers. I find it a nice workaround.
