Lately, my DVD burner has been making a clunking noise when I open or shut it. It sounds like the optical slider bit is moving back and forth roughly and causing the clunking, but I really don't know what I'm talking about here so I could be wrong.

This started relatively recently, and I first noticed it after using DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD. The drive works fine, but the noise is definitely sketchy.

Strangely, the clunking only happens sometimes - I usually notice it after burning a DVD, and it lasts for a little while after that. For instance, I just burned a DVD and it made the noise upon ejecting, and it did so for the next 15 or so minutes. But, as it took me a while to write this, it has now stopped making the noise completely and can be opened and shut without incident.

Is this happening to anyone else? Should I be calling Lenovo and complaining, or is this some sort of user error/something relating to DVD decrypter? I've only had my T400 for a few months, so it's definitely under warranty...

There's no need to complain. Call and ask for a new drive.
