Alright I plan on ordering the T400 very soon. Now, I was wondering if I order Windows Vista Ultimate, will this include the 64bit edition?

I want to order 4GB of ram total and since lenovo is offering reasonable prices I was going to just order it through them. The problem is that the only way to select 4GB of RAM is to order Vista Business 64 but I want Vista Ultimate. When Vista Ultimate is selected it only allows for 3GB max to be selected?

Should I just call them and talk to a sales rep to get this ordered or is there another way arount this?

    TIA

If you want 4GB of RAM without Business x64, you’ll need to call them—as the Ultimate they give is not x64.

I think that the Vista Ultimate version lenovo sells is 32 bit, but you can buy the Lenovo 32 bit Ultimate and install 64 bit Ultimate on your own using your OEM key they will give you. Once you get your machine you will need to acquire the 64 bit Vista media, the anytime upgrade, OEM or retail CD is needed. Then you can do a clean install and use your key that your bought to get 64 bit Ultimate. The main thing is that if you want Ultimate, make sure to buy some version of Ultimate from Lenovo(either 32 or 64 bit if they have it). Once you have Ultimate you can install the 32 or 64 bit version on your own with a little bit of work.

If this sounds confusing, I can explain in more detail.

Is there a reason why they offer 64 bit only on the business version? I just ordered a T400 with 32 bit Home Premium in part because I did not want to shell out extra money for features I do not need (and conversely Premium has features that Business lacks).

As an aside question, if I decide to upgrade to 64, will I necessarily have to do a "clean" install (including formatting HD?) Could I simply upgrade on top of the existing software?

I guess because the T400 is targeted more towards businesses, they don’t offer the x64 consumer versions of Vista for it—but they do for some of their other models. As for upgrading, you can’t upgrade from 32 to 64. It requires a full installation and whether you want to format your drive first is up to you, but you will need to reinstall everything.
