I was looking at the T400 and it looks like there is now an option for the 14.1 WXGA TFT High Nit, w/ LED Backlight. Is this the way to go? Is this a lot different than the previous LED backlight?

I believe it to be the 680 nit Ultra bright option ( read this). If you plan on using it outside in Saudi Arabia (or similar), then yes it is probably a good choice.

However, if you mainly want it indoors, or outside in the shade, the WXGA+ CCFL or LED (200-250 nits) option is probably a better choice.

So, since the LED (200-250 nits) isn't available at this time, should I wait for it to become an option again? Also, do you know if the High Nit has better viewing angles?

I have been waiting for this option as well because of my poor vision, I like the idea of high brightness but am concerned with whether this screen will carry adequate contrast to keep the picture sharp. If contrast is poor, then high brightness would be not much advantage. Hope to hear more input as I am seriously exploring options for this laptop. And, again, the WXGA+ LED is not available. Thanks again.

I wonder if the high brightness for longer periods is harder on the eyes or if it deteriorates it faster?

You can always turn a bright screen dimmer, but you cannot turn a dim screen brighter
