I have two T400's and when I compare them I see a very noticeable difference in screens. One of them shows white as superwhite and other one shows it more bluish. The only difference between these two is one running win xp and other running win vista but I am not sure if that could make difference. Both are set to use inter graphics controller with default settings. When I compared them with hp dv9000 I saw the one that shows less bright white looks more like dv9000 display.
Does it mean something is wrong with the T400 that shows white=very white?
Both have LED screens and both are on full brightness. I will be attaching a pic soon.
thanks
EDIT:
Here are the pics.
Left one from viewer side is very white and right one has blue tint. Its more evident in real life than in pictures.
Surprisingly both screens are LP141WP2-TLB1 which is LG Philips. Both notebooks have identical config except one in the left running xp and one in the right running vista with full brightness and internal Intel GPU.The viewing angles are very bad but the screens are ultra bright.
Difference in screen:
The third pic shows obvious difference in sky color

EDIT #2 :
These [LED]crystal clear pictures are after swapping drives. One of them had xp and other vista. Even after swapping drives there was no change. One of these has blue tint irrespective of OS and other one looks very white. The difference is evident in the pics with blue text and white background from website rediff.com

If they're identical except for the OS, maybe swap hard disks between the two; boot each with the other's disk and see if the monitor coloration difference follows the drive or stays with the system? -
Lenovo could be sourcing two different LCD panels for there WXGA+ LED screens. Can you go into the device manager and confirm they are both from the same manufacture.
-
-
wow, this is a hot topic. Please keep us updated!
-
Thanks for the replies guys
I will update thread when I get back home in about 5 hrs.
-
I'm having problems figuring out who made my LCD too.
Everest home just says:
Monitor ID - LEN4036
Manufacturer - LTN141BT04002
(and Manufacture Date - 2007!)
The FRU on my order is 42X6318, but I can't seem to get the FRU lookup to find it (product type is 2764 for the T400, right?)
Anyway, I've been looking because I'm pretty underwhelmed by the display. Sure, it does seem bright, but it also seems very washed out to me. I have to say that I was really expecting to be blown away by the display, which was one of the main reasons that I ordered the T400. Compared to the other LCDs that I've got and used it just dosen't. =( -
LT I think means LG.
-
LT == Samsung
LP == LG Philips
I will update both T400 screen make soon...
@snclawson
yes product type is 2764TCO
same here, the display is very bright but colors are very poor and not vivid at all. My dv9000(glossy) and zv5000(Matte) colors look much better. -
Boy, this bums me out more than anything. I had a dv5t that I sent back to buy this and it had an amazingly gorgeous AUO WSXGA+ screen.
From looking at the older T61 screen manufacturer threads, it seems that if you're dissatisfied with the screen quality then your only option is to return the laptop and suck up the 15% restocking fee? -
Agreed. This thread is starting to depress me now. The only reason I bought the T400 (and selling my T61) was for the better screen.
If it's only a color issue, I can live with that. As a student, I'm only reading black and white text all day long. My main concerns are brightness, viewing angles, and contrast. If the matte display doesn't get the job done... we can always repolarize to glossy. Worked wonders for my T61 matte. -
Just an extra thought though... in the professional review of the T400, they have a picture of a T60 IPS vs the LED T400 and the T400 looks 100000 times better. Hope that offers some comfort.
-
snclawson: what are the specs on your T400?
-
yes I noticed that in the review and expected t400 screen to be much better. What I can say is LED screen for t400 is very very bright with good contrast and white looks very white on it ( or Bluish on another T400 I have). Viewing angles are very bad, not sure if its because its Matte. I've already mentioned colors look washed out.
and yes my 2 year old(glossy) and 6 year old(matte) laptop screen looks better
one question here, if you repolarize the display won't that void the warranty?

In the review, Kevin had a LG based panel which historically has been the better panel vs say a samsung, AUO etc.
-
-
ATI 3470 discrete graphics, P8600, 14.1 WXGA+ LED display, 6-cell battery, 5300 wireless, 2GB RAM (2 1GB SO-DIMMs), no bluetooth, home premium, CD-RW, 100GB 7200rpm drive, pc-card/express card slot.
The LCD seems to be a 14.1" WXGA+ Samsung LTN141BT (or something like that). I've been trying to find the specs on the screen to see how it compares to the LG, but I haven't found anything so far.
I have been messing with the `Color Saturation' slider in the Catalyst Control Panel and bumping that up seems to help some, but it still looks washed-out. Maybe there are some other calibration options that I'm missing (I hope!). -
-
I had these same issues with my T61 Samsung and repolarizing helped a LOT. Maybe I'm just now understanding the benefit of LED backlighting, but it sounds like the panels haven't changed since the T61. The viewing angles are still going to suck and everything else is still the same.
I guess we can only hope for an LG panel and repolarization is now mandatory for me, regardless of which panel I get. -

I ordered a T400 earlier this week and now I am on the phone with lenovo trying to find out the manufacturer of the screen they used for it lol. I hope they can actually get this information for me.
-
figures.... i hope I get an LG... if I get another Samsung panel, I might cry.
-
Hmmm it seems they cannot get the info for me. I'm now trying to find out if there's some way I can return it without the restocking fee if it ends up being a samsung panel.
-
I think they charge 15% restocking if its opened and you have to return it in 30 days or so. Lenovo's site is showing 404 error.
-
Can I cancel my order if it's still on the plane to the US?
-
I talked to the cust service "supervisor" Jennifer and she said there was no way to waive the restocking fee if I wanted to return it so I just told her to cancel the order :/ **** you lenovo.
-
Aren't you guys overreacting? You don't even have the notebooks in your hands to discern how much of an issue this really is.
-
It is an issue.
Why should I pay 1,200 bucks and get an inferior panel than the next person who has the same laptop and paid the same money I did?
It doesn't make sense.
I stopped by J&R yesterday and I was kinda disappointed by the display. -
I'm stuck here. I just read through the Sony forum and it seems like their LCD's are superior because the have higher color saturation.... something that Lenovo doesn't do.
After watching a video on YouTube, the Sony flexes like crazy. Something I'm not willing to give up.... what to do!?
I guess the best I can do is hope for an LG panel and replace the keyboard on my T400. Otherwise, the only thing I gained for my money is a brighter screen. -
wow 300 nits!
nice -
-
Is there any way you can destroy the screen but still have it be covered under warranty?
-
-
-
you may or may not like the newer versions' keyboard (spaced out) -
I called a warranty service place in atlanta, and they said they will replace a screen if i complain that it has a bluish tint.
-
WOW. Can you give more details Shaddix?
-
I will have to call lenovo again, they gave me the phone number of the place and some guy(i should have taken his name) told me this. What I asked him was "One of the screens that come with a lenovo T400 is bad quality and it ends up giving the white a bluish tint. I have ordered the laptop but it isn't here yet, does the warranty cover anything like this." He said "Yes that is covered under warranty we can replace it if the color is bad."
I am going to call them back tomorrow I think, I called lenovo and told them to un-cancel my order. They said they will try but are not sure if they can or not -.-;;; -
shaddix can you let us know if the warranty claim works?
-
If I do end up with the samsung and they won't replace the screen, then I'm going to seriously pursue some way of destroying the screen without voiding the warranty. -
okay guys, I've updated the first post in the thread with pics. I am not sure if u can notice the difference but its evident in real life.
-
I was expecting a massive difference, but in reality I wouldn't even have noticed had you not posted your experience. The sky is still where it's supposed to be. Whew.
-
Calibrate both screens and then complain about color shifts
That's all we're talking about here.. settings, not actual screen quality/potential.
-
The difference in the pictures is enough to bother me. The Samsung panel on that T400 looks exactly like the one on my T61. Very annoying. The increased brightness of LED simply magnifies the problem of the Samsung panel, rather than fix the problem of poor color management.
-
I just would like to point out that the comparison says nothing about which screen has better quality, all the screens came out the factory uncalibrated. the blue tints simply means that the native color temperature on the right screen is higher than the one on the left.
Which brings the point that if you really care about how your screen look, calibrate it. A hardware solution is ideal but if you don't want to spend the money(I think it's a very worthwhile investment), a software solution like this will probably do 60% of the job.
p.s. IE is also a bad choice for evaluating color because it's not color profile aware. Use firefox 3 with color management enabled. -
I agree about the viewing angles. These are some of the worst I've seen in an LCD.
I guess I'm just spoiled by IPS and PVA monitors that I've always had. Can't stand TN but not much you can do about that with a laptop these days (and not empty your bank account) -

Sweet. Thanks!
OMG!!! That plugin made a HUGE difference on my S-IPS desktop LCD.
YOU are the MAN.
Edit: Also made a noticeable difference on my T61 - Samsung LCD (calibrated, of course). Great! -
