Definitely not like my FlexView T43p, but sometimes I didn't like that screen for the complete lack of privacy!

Check out the viewguard removable privacy screen. You can take it off when you want the good angles and put it on when you need the privacy.

Hmm...I dont think the hardware has got anything to do with it. Its the software. Both samsung and lg / philips screens have the same specs so they ought to work the same. If you guys notice a difference in the viewing colors then it is the fault of the software. I for one think that XP and Vista use different color profiles. They're vastly different in their build hence the difference I suppose. So if you calibrate your Vista machine I'm sure you'll be getting the same colors you're getting on your other machine.

To atlguy's point about software, did the OP ever do what I suggested at the beginning and simply swap hard drives between the two systems to see if the screen differences followed the hard drives (thus a software based difference) or stayed with the display panel (thus a hardware based difference).

It'd take, what, two minutes to swap the drives? One small screw on each system, pop the drives out and in, wouldn't even need to put the screw in if you're staying put, boot up and see.

Lew has a great point. It's literally about TWO MINUTES to pull the hard drives out and swap them. They pull out/in like PCMCIA cards. Very efficient design.

However, I'm thinking it won't help. The one thing I obsess over is the LCD quality of any laptop/desktop. This issue sounds EXACTLY like the issue that people had with the T61 model. Since Lenovo is still using LG and Samsung for their panels then I'm not surprised the Samsung panel looks blue. It always has.

LED backlighting probably just makes the panel brighter/uniform.

God, please let me get the LG panel on mine. PLEASE!!

Theoretically it shouldn't make much difference because by default, the OS itself does not make any adjustment to the LUT or the screen if the user hasn't assigned any profile. The graphic card will not randomly load anything for color management in either OS.

still, this would be a good experiment, I'm curious to see the result as well. :)

you guys aren't getting my point. Yes every panel is different, every manufacturing process has its differences but there are some standard operating parameters which both samsung, lg, philips or {insert your favorite manufacturer} must meet inorder for Lenovo to use them in a particular series of laptops.

So...if your screen looks a little different from the other guys, then the likelyhood is that you can "tweak" it to look like the other screen using some software tools. In this case the color profile is what you should be adjusting to get the two screens to look alike (whether you want to make the samsung look like the LG or vice versa ).

And why will they look alike? Well simply because they satisfy the same "standard operating parameters". Am I making any sense?

BTW has anybody yet noticed that XP has creamish color to its color scheme ( windows, panels etc.. ) while Vista is more bluish. The human eye is a very stupid receptor and more so our brain. So while one panel looks whiter ( in context of a certain set of colors ), the other panel may not ( since you're viewing it in the context of other colors ).

Check out optical illusions to know what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know where I can download software that will tell me which panel my T400 has? It arrives tomorrow!! I'm nervous and excited all at the same time. If I get a Samsung, I'm going to be SOOO disappointed.

Here's the important info. This is a Samsung panel on my T61. The T400 probably has similar identifying info.

Okay...now the difference becomes very apparent. But am I looking at it correctly? The viewing angles are different for both the laptops. You might wanna repost those pictures with the same viewing angle. But in anycase it is noticeably different. Now I'm hoping I too dont get the Samsung panel! :)

It's 9 AM and I've been up for three hours. I'm unshaven, unshowered, my teeth haven't been brushed yet, and I refuse to go to the bathroom.... all in the paranoia that if I walk away from the door, I'll miss the UPS guy.

OK, it's not that bad, but I'm sure a lot of you know the drill. I can procrastinate until 12:30 today before I have to get out of here. I wish you could GPS the UPS guy.

One other thing people can check is their online parts list if you don't want to install something to check directly. You should be able to check online with your serial number before opening your shipping box too! If you're online on your laptop it can do the lookup directly by running a little ActiveX control.

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/PART-LOOKUP.html

Here are the two part numbers I've seen so far. The first is the LG (P141WP2-TLB1) and the second is the Samsung (LTN141BT).

    42T0497 0000000 14.1 INCH LCD DISPLAY:FLAT PANEL DISPLAY
    42T0503 0000000 14.1 INCH LCD DISPLAY:FLAT PANEL DISPLAY

These are both for the order confirmation part:

    42X6318 SBB 14.1 W X G A +TFT

Interestingly, the only FRU that I could find in the Hardware Maintenance Manual is 42T0498 (I think that the above numbers are `Manufacturer Part #' and the second is supposed to be the FRU).

Thanks snclawson. If your method is right, I just checked part lookup and mine shows 42T0497.... which means.. LG!!!

I'm not gonna jump up and down yet though. The laptop was delivered (after I left home, of course) so I'll go home and confirm.

Are you guys sure that this is a samsung panel? I'll be mighty disappointed if it were to be one! :(

    Yes, it's a Samsung.

Or rather, mine is and that's the part number that came up when I checked. I can't say that they're all bad, but mine is terrible and I hope that they replace the panel when I send it in later this week for service (If they don't then I really think that I'll be trying to return it).

Of course, as Parijat has shown, even getting the LG isn't a guarantee of a good panel, but so far it seems that like the T61 you've got a much better chance.

What did lenovo support say? I will not settle on a low quality part. I'm paying as everyone else is paying. I dont deserve this! :(

Someone posted that there is a Lenovo service center in Atlanta which will replace the panel if we're not satisfied with it. I really dont want to do this. I'd rather want a new piece instead of replacing the panel.

Edit: rxblitzrx use a site like photobucket, flickr etcc...

actually, these pictures look really bad and you can't see the difference very well.

What I can say is that the LG panel has a definite "wow" factor when you look at it. Going back and forth between the LG and Samsung gives me a headache when I look at the Samsung. At least I know where all my eye strain has been coming from for the past year.

However, my Samsung panel is on a T61 which doesn't have LED backlighting. The dimmer screen could also be a huge factor in it. One other thing I've noticed though, is that I don't find a need to convert this one to glossy (as I did with my T61). The repolarization to glossy DID help the Samsung panel though. Without the glossy conversion, I stopped using my T61 15 minutes after I got it.... it was THAT bad.

My order confirmation says "42X6321 SBB 14.1 WXGA+ TFT, W/ CAMERA" and also "44C1347 SBB 14.1"WXGA+LEDB/L BTCAMWWAN".
Which one is that? I get nothing in the parts lookup section of IBM site using my type "2764" and serial number...

    That's exactly how I feel... =(

My #1 reason for ordering the T400 was what was supposed to be a gorgeous bright screen. It doesn't help that the laptop I returned to order this one (an HP dv5t) _did_ have an absolutely gorgeous AUO WSXGA+ panel. I thought that it would at least be similar, but with a matte finish instead of being glossy.

Anyway, my main complaint was that the color red on my panel is not red...it's some weird washed out orange. Green also looks a little funky/neon. I also complained how that at a viewing angle that has worked for all laptops I've ever used it looks brighter along the bottom up through the middle of the display.

They offered to send out a box so that I could send it for repair without any prompting by me. They didn't specify and I didn't press them about replacing the panel. Granted, I'm not really going to be satisfied if they don't (unless there's some magic thing they can do to the panel that I've got), but as of now I'm holding judgement until they do something I'm not happy with. So far everyone I've talked to at Customer Service have been great; very friendly and helpful.

On the first 2 pics bluish screen looks better IMHO. As on the third picture white one, but the angle used while taking a picture put the white screen in better position.

Has anyone tried to hardware calibrate your samsung panel and see if this is just a simple matter of different "out of factory" calibration standards for those 2 screen? I cannot do it because i have the LG screen.

It could also be that the samsung screens may not have passed through good QA and hence the higher number of problems. I've a dell for the past 3 years and viewing angles haven't issues for me. Contrast yes but colors look exactly as they're supposed to look and this is a 15.4" 1024x768 grainy matte display.

Screens w/ LED backlighting for Lenovo can be either LG or Samsung, so it's luck of the draw.
