I just got my first Thinkpad on Friday and I am making my fiance' very jealous. This thing is killer. Anyway I have been seeting it up and have a question about the power settings. I have it set on Energy Star currently with the screen set to turn off at ten minutes on AC power. When I wake it up I have to input my password or fingerprint to resume my session. It doesn't go into sleep mode but it does lock the computer. My only complaint is that when it locks (or sometime close to it) it will disable my wired ethernet connection. I would like it to stay connected when on AC power. Does anyone know how to set this up properly?

Can you clear that up a bit? If you're saying wake, I'm assuming you mean it was in sleep mode.

If it beeps when you turn it on, then chances are it was in Sleep. If you mean you're just opening the lid and it's already at the startup screen, then here's something you can try:

Launch power manager and check out all the settings under Advanced that say "change what closing the lid" does. Another way to get to these power settings is to right click on your desktop and go to screen saver. From there click on power settings and the windows version of power management will pop up. It's also worth seeing what those are set at. See what those settings are at. If you don't want anything turning off while on AC power, then change it to "do nothing" when you close the lid. If that's already the case, then another thing you can try is:

Open my computer and go to Network. From there open network and sharing center.

Then click on manage my network connections.

Right click on your ethernet adapter and click on properties. Next click on Configure.

    Go to the Advanced tab.

You should now see a list of Properties.

Scroll down until you see the one labeled "System Idle Power Saver" and change it to Disabled if it is already Enabled.

I don't use the energy saver setting at all, so it's possible that it has some other setting in power manager that I'm not aware of. Just check out power manager first to see what all of your settings are, and if that doesn't solve the problem then try the network settings that I wrote above.

I was not asleep. I have it configured to do nothing upon lid close except lock and require a password. I use it during the day at work and run google talk to communicate with coworkers and family thus why I want it to stay connected. It wont go into sleep mode but it will shut off the display and then require a password upon wakeup (mouse move or keystroke). Once I get back to my desktop it then reconnects to the connection. I did find late last night the setting in device manager for power saving upon system idle. I didn't realize that it would be built into the driver. I figured that would have been configured through the power manager. Thanks for the response it was helpful.
