I will be getting a T400 soon, it will come with 1GB of ram. Does Vista Business 64 really need 4GB or would buying a 2GB stick for a total of 3GB be enough.

I now there is all talk about the dual channel thing with getting two of a kind (2x2GB sticks). If the performance will only go up by 5% the most, well thats not a lot.

    Any thoughts?

3GB would be fine, but you should get 4GB to take full advantage of a 64-bit operating system.

select the 2gig upgrade, then finish customizing your laptop. add it to your cart, then go to accessories & upgrades under products. select 'memory'. find pc3-8500 2gig 1 dimm ram. it's like $60 cheaper. They raised the prices then give coupons. it's silly but it makes you feel like you're saving but you're not. As long as you know how to put ram in..you'll be saving a good bit.

Anyone try different RAM in there, what are the timings on the RAM Lenovo puts in?

I'm thinking of getting 4GB Mushkin from Newegg, 7-7-7-12.

    Thanks

My x200 Tablet has a 2GB Samsung DDR3 @ 1066MHz with timings of 7-7-7. I would assume the T400 uses the same modules.

How does having 4GB of memory allow one to take full advantage of a 64 bit operating system, while 3GB somehow does not?

Its kind of the other way around, although works either way, kind of philosophical.

What program do you have that uses 64-bit? Well one benefit is that the 64-bit will read the 4GB and the 32-bit will not. So then you get use out of having 64-bit OS.

But it would be better to say a 64-bit OS allows you take full advantage of your 4GB of RAM, but then you knew that, so why you ask in the first place is a wonder.
