My T400 still runs VERY well. Recently though it has begun to freeze for 3-5 seconds and then recover. It has only happened in the last couple of days but I thought it was the internet at first but I have been on two separate networks and it is definitely the computer.

Any ideas? I try to keep my computer in tip top shape so I would like to resolve this.

Run PC Doctor and see if you have any failing hardware. Could be signs of bad RAM or HDD.

I use CCleaner but it appears that and PC Doctor are two separate things. Is there a trial version of PC Doctor I might be able to use. Is there a free software like PC Doctor that might be available?

I do think checking all my components is the best option at this point.

If you have the original Lenovo image, it comes with PC Doctor.

I am not sure I can pinpoint which component is causing the problem.

My problem has become a bigger problem. I tried updating drivers and now I cannot boot to the desktop.

I tried to update the AMD 3400 chipset driver and something went wrong. I have tried to roll it back and update it again but my computer will not book to the desktop. (I am running Safe mode)

It boots to the password screen, I input my password and then boots to a blank desktop. I do have access to Task Manager on the blank desktop. It is only running 27 processes. (Usually 58 or so)

Any ideas? I am running 8.792.5.0 for the Radeon 3400 series.

Edit: Just noticed that safe mode is only running 27 processes. Conincidence?

I would also check (i) Event Viewer's System Log and (ii) the HDD SMART data.

If the HDD is starting to have problems then this could cause temporarily pauses which will only get worse. You can run Active SMART trial which will notify you if the HDD health is deteriorating.

This sounds likely. This HDD has been chirping for awhile and it is refurbished because I sent back a dead one a while back.

How would I go about checking the Event Viewers Log etc.

Lucky for me I upgraded the HDD as soon as I bought the computer so I have switched the HDD to what it came with for now.

Funny thing though. The graphics card is not working on this HDD either. Really don't want to update the driver because that is what messed me up earlier this morning.

Typing "ev" into the search bog should bring up Event Viewer at the top of the list. Otherwise get there through Control Panel > Administrative Tools.

Anything in particular I should be looking for in event viewer?

Update: It boots to the password screen. I input my password and then it boots to a black screen. I can still use control alt delete though.

This happened when I tried to update my GPU driver. Not sure what to do. I would really hate to reformat my computer but I may end up doing that in a week or so if I cannot fix this.

    Any ideas?

    Errors and warnings.

Did you try booting using Safe Mode (press F8 a few times just as Windows is starting). This uses a default graphics driver.

Yes. I booted to safe mode no problems but it would not boot to the desktop. However, I received the BSOD so it looks like I will be purchasing a new hard drive. I am using my back up drive at the moment.

Any reason to try and fix a hard drive that had the BSOD?

You can check the SMART data which may indicate what sort of problem is occurring. Also, most HDD manufacturers have a diagnostics program on their website. You may find that if he diagnostics confirm the problem and the HDD is within the warranty period (3 to 5 years) then you can get it replaced.
