From what I've read, it looks like the T400 has no option of SPDIF out, either through the laptop itself or the advanced mini-dock.

However, in the Win7 sound settings there are two playback device options -- one is "speakers" via the Conexant 20561 SmartAudio card, and the other is "SPDIF Interface", also via the Conexant 20561 SmartAudio card.

When I select SPDIF as the default device, in the properties window it tells me output is via the jack on the "rear panel" -- but there ain't nothing emanating from the Mini-dock jacks, which is the only "rear panel" output there is.

I presume it's simply a case of the soundcard in the T400 supporting SPDIF (and this is recognized by Win7) but the option is not enabled in the T400 hardware. Is that correct? Or should I be able to get SPDIF output somehow?

I believe that is correct - most laptops do not have SPDIF-out, and it would be especially surprising to find one on a business laptop.

While I have never hooked anything up to it my Advanced Mini Dock has an SPDIF port on the right side.
So it is not on the right-hand side of the rear panel, but on the side.
If yours has this too then give it a try and let us know if it worked.

Yep, the laptop doesn't have SPDIF but it's in the dock. So if the sound card supports it, it should work with the Dock.
Speaking of that, I should try mine as I have an advanced dock.
