Whenever my T400 wakes up from sleep, or I open the lid when its not plugged in, the screen is at ~1% brightness. I can see whats going on if I squint and let my eyes adjust; the brightness is set to max -- I can see the little green bars. I wind up having to turn it off, let it relax for a while, and then plug reboot. Any ideas?

Also, for those curious, my 160gb 7200rpm does not shut up.

it is called dynamic brightness contol. Go disable it in power manager:
under Global Power Settings go to Dynamic Brightness Control and do what you want there
