Here is the config of Lenovo T400 I am planning to buy (a deal offered to me)

    T9400 (2.53GHz) 6MB L2 Cache, 2GB PC3-8500 R(1DIMM), 160GB HD 7200rpm, 14.1” WXGA+ LCD, AMD M82XT Graphics (256MB), Multiburner, Wireless-N Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 9c Li-Ion, WebCam, Vista Business with XP Professional Downgrade, 7-in-1 Media Card Reader, Fingerprint Reader, 3-Year Warranty.

    Price : US$1449

Is this the best choice at this price?

    Thanks
    JAX

    That price isn't anything special.

That is a good configuration, but you may be able to find a better price if you look around thoroughly.

This config is for my office as well as personal use... This is part of a deal offered right now... Thinking whether to take it or not... All suggestions are welcome.

Also, is there a way to find out if the 14.1” WXGA+ LCD mentioned is a LED screen or not? Just curious to know... ;)

If it isnt mentioned as an LED backlit screen then it probably is not.

The config that I came to know about is part of a catalog... I'm yet to confirm if it's really LED or not... The last time I asked, I dint get any straight answers... is there a way to look at a the laptop box or something to know this piece of information?

Does the laptop box list a type number?

It should include a 7 digit (****-***) number somewhere. This number is probably 2765-***, 2767-***, 6473-****, 6474-****, 7417-***, or similar. If you can find this number you can check it against the Thinkpad Tabook. This includes detailed specs including if it has a LED or CCFL display (most have CCFL).

You should also look at the same (or similar) machine types on Provantage and other outlets. You may be able to get a better deal.

Depending on what you are doing, I would drop the processor to a p series for better battery life. Unless your doing CAD, encoding, decoding, you won't notice the difference. Also make sure that screen is a LED backlit display.

@ jonlumpkin: Nice suggestion... ;) i checked and it seems this config has only LCD display.. no LED. Also I was wondering about the 3 year warranty. Is it international by any chance?

When buying notebooks I def recommend getting the best you can get in the components that are hard to upgrade and if you are looking to stay under a price point save money on the things that can be upgraded.

Screen is by far the most costly to upgrade so I would definitely go for the best(LED backlit)

CPU and graphics are the next most important(P8400 for battery life T9400 for performance, also integrated saves alot of battery life so if you are a really battery nut then get that instead of discrete)

RAM and HD space are definitely the ones you want to worry about last, I really like getting RAM in denominations that will allow me to upgrade to max capacity without having to remove any modules, just adding

Camera, finger print reader, bluetooth are all nice to have but you can always purchase addons in the future

That does look like a nice configuration minus the LED backlit, DEFINITELY go with the LED backlit if you have the funds

Appreciate all replies so far... It's been really helpful... Just to explain my problem, I'm not allowed to choose any components as of now... So it's really up to me to find out if paying US$1449 for this config is really worth it!

Try going in to the Lenovo site again ASAP. The coupon code to use upon checkout is: UPSNOVSALE --- note use all CAPS, it's case sensitive. Let me know how that works.

Also, my config ordered 2 days ago for T400 was about $100 less than yours (about $1,360 pretax) including 3 yr ONSITE next day warranty. (not depot). I think my config is identical to yours (I have downgrade to Win XP), but that should not affect the price anyway. I also chose the Turbo cache $50. In any case, it seems I am about $100 less, if you have the ONSITE warranty which is better than depot service.
