This is only from what I've read here (I don't know for SURE), but the CPP (Contractor) portal is now open to "family and friends" and no proof of any kind (other than having the "passcode") is required.

That's just because you previously visited the students and alumni section, it's a problem with the website. Delete your cookies and it should work.

Can someone explain to me how WWAN GPS works (assuming you got a wwan card). ie do you have to subscribe to your networks wwan service for the gps to work, or is it just a seperate gps receiver?

In other words, is it possible to get a gps receiver that's integrated into the computer or a cardslot, not just a usb/bluetooth receiver?

It seems that you could get a better deal with the student discount PLUS the coupon than with the contractor discount (a better discount). I ordered my T400 with the student discount and additional 15% discount coupon on the first day although I wish there would be a review on it before it came out like the x200 on NBR

I did the same thing, Student discount + 15%... Pretty nice price!

Now, does anyone know: If I call to modify my order how might it affect the coupon usage and/or ship date? I ordered the LED screen without the camera and wanted the one WITH the camera...

For Lenovo, I am pretty sure you have to cancel your order than re-order it. It will most likely delay the whole process

I understand how it feels to have a desire for new laptops, I have been waiting for three years to get my new thinkpad T400 and during those times I have not read much about new laptops because they are going to drive you crazy into buying a new one.

Maybe if you chose to pay via PayPal, one can get them to ship it abroad to your country? At least they offer you to create a new PayPal account, where you can pick your country.

But I don't know what happens after that. You probably have to enter a shipping address which is required to be U.S only.

Ok. If I'm going to buy it for real I'll try.

Also does anyone know that exactly is the new display port system for the T500?
From the pictures on lenovo.com it seems that it's VGA and HDMI side-by-side. If that's true then, it's a very good move by Lenovo I think. And also it says that T500 supports HD audio wich indicates that the port really is an HDMI port... Anyone can confirm that?

I'd really like to buy a T500, I've recently bought an X300 as my mobile device and it's great.

Trouble is as usual with most of these manufacturers the treatment of customers in the US as opposed to the rest of the world is enormous.

I'm based in the UK so will be offered a poverty spec non-customisable T500 for an inflated price. It's really beginning to annoy me.

Isn't it about time Lenovo, Sony etc pulled their fingers out of their backsides and started to treat their customers equally especially if they are paying substantially more for their laptops?

It's called Display Port, which is a different digital interface.

You can get Display Port to HDMI/DVI adapters if needed. Google it.

    Hey chen,

I figured it out. Apprently it's just a glitch and doesn't refresh. I went to change something and a Lenovo Rep said it was already in production. It just says "in progress" in blue but it might actually be in production. Hope that helps!

Its quite funny, chalk it up to another lenovo typo...

    Specs Link

It shows the T500 with a HDMI Connector on the Canadian site. Then again, the graphics cards still show there code names as well.

Ok, let's clear this up, so that it doesn't cause any more confusion.

The port in the middle is called Display Port.

It's only the SL series that has HDMI ports. The T500/W500 have Display Ports, and as I said before, there are adapters.

Great post, i am stuck between a T400 and an HP Elitebook 6930p. Have a look, but take the "Mil-Spec 810F" with a pinch of salt, marketing bull****.
So three things I'm on my mind about the T400.

    1) Do they change the fan or anything else if you chose a different CPU than the basic? i was thinking to buy with the basic CPU/RAM, and upgrade sometime in later when i am forced to upgrade to VISTA. I think its not very complicated to do, but it's nice to know if anyone did this before.

    2) Also, i am not very sure the performance gain will be so big between a T9400 and P8600 processor. I see there is a difference in L2 Cache size, 6MB and 3 MB respectively. I don't use VISTA yet, so i don't know what the 3MB L2 cache difference practically means.
Maybe a better choice is the P8600 processor, that means a (29% * whatever % of power the CPU uses) increase battery life over the 35W if using T9400.

    3) Is it possible Lenovo has something like Quickboot2 from HP or HyperSpace from Phoenix BIOS? Now they don't seem to have this feature, but maybe some future bios update. Not that important for me though, i just want to know.

After the agony we had with Turbo Memory hard drive cache on the T61's, have any of you added it to the configs you are selecting? What's your thought on its value?

Nope -- I'd rather ensure I have the WWAN antennas installed (the options seem to be mutually exclusive) in case I decide to try that out in a few months or so.

I've talked to a couple friends much more knowledgeable than I am and they universally say that "turbo memory" is a crutch for slow HDD's and minimal RAM. You're better off going with lots of RAM and a fast HDD.

*shrug* The part will be on ebay soon if not already, so it isn't like you can't change your mind and try it out later.

Did anyone notice that on the T500 some of the options are not yet available? EX: Turbo memory and the LED back lit screen?

Anyone know anything about when this option will be available?

There are a couple other threads in which the lack of an LED backlit 15.4" screen is mentioned. They're not listed in the current version of the tabook so chances are you won't see a 15.4" LED backlit screen in the near future.

When I look on lenovo.com, Turbo Memory is very clearly an option on the T500. It's disabled if your select the 200GB/FDE drive since caching data in Turbo Memory rather defeats the whole point of Full Disk Encryption. ;) Are you not seeing it as an option?

I'm curious though - if you're specifying an adequate amount of RAM and a fast HDD, what benefit do you anticipate from Turbo Memory?

    Lew,

Thanks for the quick response. I was under the impression that turbo memory helped boot time and the time to return from hibernation. I plan to use 4 GB 1066 and a 7200 rpm hd.

I do see the Turbo Memory option now.

Thanks for the information on the lack of an LED screen.

The tabook claims the lenovo ultrabay battery for the t500 is part # 43R9250,
"ThinkPad Advance Ultrabay Battery II". This seems fine, but the DVD/bluray options that come with the system are ultrabay slim.

Can anyone clarify this, or tell me whether it is in fact part 43R9250?

    Thanks

Just got off the phone with Lenovo and even though my order says estimated ship date of 8/26 on the website he said it's in production but estimated ship date is the 23rd of NEXT MONTH...

Reasons: HIGH DEMAND for the new t400 and a restriction on the 6-cell battery.

But of course he wanted me to know it could still arrive BEFORE the 23rd of NEXT MONTH......

    AHHHHHHHHHHH
