For those of you that received your T400/T500's, could you please post your HD type (200gb/7200rpm, etc.) and the brand (hitachi, western digital, etc.)?

I think it would be really helpful for people that are about to order or still waiting.

    Thanks!

update: based on the replies so far, here are the HDD brands that seem to be shipping on t400/t500's ->

    80gb 5400rpm = fujitsu/hitachi
    160gb 5400rpm = fujitsu
    100gb 7200rpm = hitachi
    250gb 5400rpm = seagate
    160gb 7200rpm = hitachi/seagate
    320gb 5400rpm= fujitsu
    200gb 7200rpm = hitachi

CONSENSUS: 5400rpm HDD's are usually fujitsu, except maybe the 250gb version (seagate), and 7200rpm HDD's are most likely hitachi

No one has an answer to this? Or has it been answered in another thread? I'm interested myself so I know if I need to buy a faster, more dense replacement drive.

For those who don't know how to find the brand, open up device manager and post the letter-number combination of your disk drive.

I’d like to hear from some owners on this as well, but, since Lenovo didn’t have the HD I wanted anyway, I took matters into my own hands and bought a Seagate 250GB 7200rpm drive from a third party.

Ordered with 250GB 5400rpm drive -- T400 arrived with Seagate Momentus 5400.4 250GB drive. I'll use that for backups; I put a 250GB/7200rpm WD drive in it.

I decided to order one of the new 320gb/7200rpm from newegg. I think it was cheaper than the 200gb/7200rpm from lenovo.

Edit: yeah it was cheaper. The 200gb from lenovo costs $172 vs $159 hitachi 320gb.

Remember though that the 200/7200 from Lenovo is the model that supports Bulk Data Encryption, so it's entirely fair to compare the price against a hard drive that doesn't support BDE or equivalent. ~$150 is best price I've seen for the Hitachi 7k200 0A53070 vs. ~$110-120 for the non-BDE 7k200.

Has anyone gone for the basic 5400rpm 80gb drive, or the 7200rpm 100gb drives? I really don't need much more than that space wise, but wouldn't mind the extra 20gb if the 7200rpm drive's performance was better. Well, assuming that the power draw and heat were similar. That's the real kicker though, and without knowing which drives Lenovo uses it's hard to tell. =(

The T400 reviewed on this site had the 7200rpm 160gb hard drive.

The hd tune screenshot shows that it is a Hitachi HTS722016K9S

With all due respect, I think you're overanalyzing this...

All HDD brands fail. Do some do so more than others? I've not seen any statistically significant data; maybe it exists. I suspect any real differences will vary more by specific drive lines than manufacturer. Lots of anecdotal "evidence"; and which brand is junk all depends on whose stories you believe.

As to performance, check out tomshardware.com.

Beyond that, Google will lead to you all kinds of opinions about hard drives and what to choose. ;)

I got an Hitachi 80GB 5400rpm drive. From a performance perspective, the drive sucks bad. Read bad. Much worse than I thought it would be.

I was already planning on buying either an SSD or a larger 7200rpm model, which is why I didn't upgrade it, but still, if you care at all about performance, avoid this drive.

Its actually rather humourous when you think about it, combining 2.4+ ghz dual core processors and DDR3 RAM with a 4 year old, 5400 rpm hard drive. Kind of makes you think "whats the point?" :)

those of you who got either the hitachi or seagate 160gb 7200rpm hdds:

were they the newer models? i.e.,

    hitachi 7k320 (not old 7k200)
    or
    seagate 7200.3 (not old 7200.2)

    my 250GB 5400RPM drive is a Fujitsu MHZ2250BH.

    http://sev.prnewswire.com/computer-hardware/20080519/NEM00419052008-1.html

"While it's self-evident that all HDDs get 'rested' when not being used (and are built to a 'good enough' duty cycle), it is equally true that there are many business-critical applications that do not offer any 'rest' time ... and cannot afford any downtime," commented Mark Peters, an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group. "Such extreme operating demands clearly require the very highest-duty-cycle disks designed specifically to support such 'always on' environments.

The MHZ2-BS 5400 RPM series is designed to support industrial applications with 24x7 access including surveillance cameras, industrial PCs, POS systems, ATMs and robotics. Both the MHZ2-BK and MHZ2-BS series have extremely low power consumption, providing the highest level of energy efficiency available. Fujitsu is the only company currently offering RV (rotational vibration) compensation technology for 2.5" SATA HDDs, which minimizes the adverse effects of vibration to maximize performance of applications under demanding operating conditions.

does this mean, it is better not to upgrade the Fujitsu hard drive because of their higher reliability?
