    Hi all,

I have a two year old T400 running Vista 64 that has a problem and I don't have any idea where to start looking to fix it. My problem is none of the browsers (Firefox, IE & Chrome) or my mail clients can connect to the internet. Firefox times out and IE + Chrome come back telling me they can't establish a connection the internet or the address can't be located.

The strange part is I have no problem getting a strong wireless connection to my router and I can do windows updates no problem so something seems to be blocking the browsers and email clients. ESET Nod32 also cannot connect to do it's updates. This problem started last year but since I had already moved on to another machine I haven't fooled with it much. I do use the machine every once in a while though and would like to be able to connect with it.

I thought maybe it was windows firewall causing the problem but have turned it off completely but it makes now difference. Does anybody have any ideas I could try to it back online?

    Thanks

Maybe dump Access Connections as a place to start.

Does it work through a LAN cable? I suspect it's the same, but would be interesting to know.

Do you have anything like ZoneAlarm installed? I have seen weird blocked internet access with that.

What if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?

can you ping to a website, such as, google.com or yahoo.com?

I once could not browse any website, but ping was still OK. I later figured out that MSE causes that problem, and after I updated it, the problem's gone

Thanks for the responses. Here is what I found.

I went in and turned off access connection so it doesn't start up. No change.

    LAN cable. No Change.

No Zone alarm, just MS Firewall which I have turned off.

Boot into safe mode with networking. No change.

Ping. Yes! I can ping google.com in normal start or safe. This would make sense and is probably why Windows update works fine.

MSE - Microsoft Essentials??? I don't have that installed. Just MS defender which I turned off from starting up.

I've got to get to bed tonight but am willing to try any other ideas tomorrow when I get home from work.

    Thanks.

is this a single router you're having problems at? can other machines access the internet on the same router, with the same method of connection? check your router settings.

From what you said, it's probably because your antivirus/internet security software. just disable it and try again
