I purchased my T400 a couple of months ago, and ordered my "free" windows 7 upgrade discs. I want to do a clean install with these discs. I'm just curious if anyone knows how these discs will work. WIll they have all of the particular drivers, etc. for my model of machine (2764CTO), or is it just a regular Windows 7 install disc like I could buy at a store?

Is it going to be a major pain in the butt to track down all of the right drivers, etc. for my machine to do a clean install of windows 7? (i've had driver problems since the day my machine was delivered - can't find driver for Microsoft 6to4 adapter). are there any guides or anything that will walk me through the process?

With Acer/Gateway/eMachines' XP to Vista free upgrade program at least, they provided one driver disk with Windows 7 drivers and the basic software that would come with a new computer (ie: Roxio, antivirus trial version, etc) that you could select from, along with the main Vista install disk. The install disk was pretty much a clean install. Not sure if it will be the same case with Lenovo, but I'm betting it will be similar.

It's hard to say. I'd probably look to what they did with the Vista upgrade as an indication of what they'll do for Windows 7. I bought my last new ThinkPad right before the free Vista upgrade and I can't remember what they did. My guess is it'll probably be an upgrade disc or recovery discs. I don't see them handing out a driver disc as they'll all be available for download.

From what I've read, you can do a clean install from upgrade disks. My only concern is if the disks that Lenovo sends out will be actual upgrade disks or some sort of recovery disk instead.

I got my T400 with XP 32 bit installed. When I go to the upgrade request site it asks me to select which version of Windows came with my laptop. There's no XP option, so I chose Vista 32 and it says that I am only eligible for Windows 7 32 bit. Since it's just a drop down menu for selection, I'm thinking I might be able to just say that I got Vista 64 bit with my system so I can get the Windows 7 64 upgrade disk. Think it will work?

Won't hurt to try. Worst they can do is refuse, or say yes and end up sending you 32-bit disks.

Yeah but I don't want to waste $17 on the 32 bit disk.. :)

those discs should be the recovery media, which will wipe your entire hdd and install the recovery image, it will include all your drivers and other Lenovowares that you find in the current OS.

I called Lenovo today and they said they weren't given any information about the Windows 7 disks yet.

I think I might just skip the $17 "upgrade" and buy an upgrade disk from Microsoft for $30 (+$13 if I want a physical disk).
