My T400 has been crashing -- it will not get past the boot and freezes up as as soon as the desktop appears, at which point, the screen goes blue and I get a fleeting page of text that indicates some sort of fatal subsystem error. I am able to boot in safe mode. But I don't really know what to do beyond that; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

disable the automatic restart option, then boot into regular mode to see the bsod info.

Trying it now.
PS: Found this thread at Lenovo forums: I have to decipher what it means, but it seems to describe my sitch exactly. http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T400_series_ThinkPads&message.id=11194&jump=true -
Crashed the exact same way it did before. Where would I find BSOD info?

Depress the last known good configuration button while rebooting. DO NOT allow the SP3 to rerun.
Please let the women know on the Lenovo channel. There is a mail address mix up and I cant go over there. -

Here's where I am at: I started in safe mode, went to system restore and then chose May 1st. I think the upgrade that is screwing me is the one delivered late in the day on May 1st. Mine seems to be working now; I also disabled the automatic system updates.
