I am thinking of purchasing the T400 with a standard harddrive. But when Windows 7 comes along and ssd becomes cheaper, I would eventually like to make the switch. Does the T400 have a slot for SSD?

yeah, it's the slot with the label "switch on your brain here!". ;-)
no, seriously, most ssd models have a 2.5" sata drive enclosure and interface. that is, you can exchange your hdd for an ssd.

You can also buy an Ultrabay adapter and replace the optical drive with an SSD. This would be my recommendation as you can have a small and fast SSD for your operating systems/programs, and a large/cheap hard drive for your data files.

Or you can use the SSD in the main bay for work, and use the Ultrabay for a second bootable drive for crap you don't want in your work computer, as well as data.

The Samsung SLC that originally shipped in the x300 is also very good [Lenovo appears to be currently using a slightly inferior Samsung MLC drive]. However, it's price is right on par with the Intel x25-M.

r/w specs are the poorest reason to pick an ssd.
how many times a day does one run benchmark-level applications that require the highest speeds?
on the other hand, the power consumption and the random access speed are two real-world criteria that make a difference in the experience of using a computer.

I got the Samsung and have not looked back since
boots like a mofo, search and other file related stuff are superfast
and my battery life is ~10hrs with the 9-cell

and I would have still chosen it had its sequential r/w speeds been a quarter of what they are now

btw. will t400 support SATA II interface SSD? (in other words will it limit the speed of SATA II SSD to SATA I? )

I do believe that it supports SATA II fully. 99% positive it does.

Edit: Just checked with Everest and it says full SATA II support for both main HD and Ultrabay HD.
