you're a good man. i think the ppl here just want to share your excitement of your t400 arrival. i know alot of ppl are still waiting for their shipments, so maybe some random pics of the first 24hr experience would help stop our thirst

God...that factory fresh shot is irresistible to look at. I would be like a child on Christmas morning if I were you. Mine will be "shipping" on 9/3, though according to the rep in an excited tone:

"Sir, to be honest with you, I would not be surprised if your system ships THIS week!"

    We will see.

On the other hand my estimated ship date was 8/28 and it shipped on 8/20. I took delivery on 8/27.

    Miracles do happen. :D

Ah yes, I definitely have not dismissed this as a possibility! Perhaps if the latest tablet is released before my order ships I will opt for that instead. I feel as though it would be more adequate for my labs at school.

I will be buying a T400 with Intel Antitheft and Wimax Wifi link 5350 in 4th quarter 2008. I wonder how long it will take to ship. Heres hoping that 4th quarter orders ship faster though it has to go through a whole build process and customs and is built to order so it likely wont be faster.

Much like buying a car from the factory.

Debian Lenny. Everything but wireless works out of the box. Kernel 2.6.27 will have wireless support.

No. Ubuntu is just Debian with a middleman in the way (and always in the way).

so if i ordered a t400 now what time could i expect to receive it?

its either the t400 or a new xbr6 tv. the xbr6 i can get quickly and i'd like to get the t400 just as fast.

i'd prefere the t400 though if i can get it in no more than two weeks.

I ordered mine on the 12th and just got it on the 27th, making it 2 weeks and 1 day from ordering to delivery. This was with 2 day shipping, mind you.

I originally ordered two 6 cell batteries, but after calling and being told that there was a 60 day turn around on the battery, I pulled the spare 6 cell from the order. I'm really glad I did as I don't think I'd really need it anyway.

I also last talked to a rep 3-4 days before my order shipped. He pulled my order up and instantly said WOW at my estimated ship date of 11/10. He paused for 15-20 seconds before saying that he thought it would probably ship within a week, week and half. I was quite surprised when I got the shipped email a few days later. After calling them a few times trying to get info on my order, I also noticed that the people in sales seem to be American (and thus, speak Enligsh clearly) and seem to generally know what they're talking about when compared to the general support.

After all that, I have to say, the T400 is awesome.

I thought I saw some retailers with models in stock and ready to ship? If you don't need a custom built model then maybe you can try a retailer. For example, my quick search indicates that pcmall has several models that they list as in stock and available to ship the next day (though I would call to confirm!).

no way jose. i want a custom model. plus retailers wont allow me to use my moms ibm discount.

these things get sent from china, correct?

also, any chance the t400 gets updated with an hmdi port anytime in its lifecycle? if they plan on updating the thing i wouldnt want to get one now...

I just received an email telling me my T400 has shipped. T9400, 4GB, LED screen, discreet graphics & 6 cell. Ordered 8/20 with an expected shipping date of 9/3. The only problem is, I canceled this order on 8/23 so it should never have been manufactured!

I originally ordered a T400 and messenger bag on 8/20. The bag shipped right away which was fine but after a couple of days I was having second thoughts about the T400. I called Lenovo CS on 8/23 to cancel the order. They said the bag had already shipped but the T400 hadn't. Fine I said, I'll just keep the bag but cancel the T400. They told me the order was canceled.

That weekend I hit a few B&M and did some more research. I came to the same conclusion I had originally that the T400 was great buy and what I should get. So on 8/27 I place another order for about the same T400 but went from the T9400 -> P8600 and the 6 cell -> 9 cell. I knew the 9 cells were a hold up but I'm not in a hurry so the was OK with me.

Now, I can't get in touch with Lenovo sales as they are shut down for reasons beyond their control. The two systems are close enough I would take the first one but I'm afraid if I accept it they will go ahead and build the second one and ship it to me even if I cancel that order. Apparently canceling an order really has no effect on whether it gets built and shipped so I am inclined to refuse the first one and just wait for the second.

I knew when I did this it wasn't a good idea as I've read countless posts on how flaky Lenovo's ordering system is. Lesson learned. At least I paid with a credit card so I can contest the charges when they show up on my bill.

    This happens sometimes.
Simply don't sign for the laptop and it will be returned to the manufacturer. Be sure to call and report the problem or they will try to charge you a 15% restocking fee. UPS may try to deliver the laptop multiple times, just be sure not to sign for it, don't even open the door.

Make the UPS driver's life a little easier and tell him you're refusing delivery.

That's good too; you don't want a family member to sign for it either.

Thanks guys. Yes, I'll leave my UPS driver a note telling him I am refusing delivery. My driver is a great guy so I don't want to jerk him around. He always will come by a second time after I get home from work or meet me over at the UPS store so I don't have to drive to their terminal to pick up signature required deliveries. I wish they would just have canceled the order like they were suppose to.

I ordered the 160 GB and after all the Bloat + partitions + OS, I only have 120GB left.

25% loss, wow, if i had gotten the 80 GB I would have like no space....

Except that your incorrectly assuming that a 160GB drive has 160 usable GB. Most you'll get out of it is about 149GB.

So you're really only seeing about a 19% usage.

Burn recovery media and ditch the partitions if it bothers you. Or buy a 320GB/7200rpm drive from NewEgg. ;)

You might want to do a fresh install without all the bloatware. Installing all the drivers back from lenovo's website took a while though.
I formatted my t400, partitioned the drive and did a clean install of vista ultimate. For some reason even my wirelesss LAN transfer was faster. With my router set to N, my desktop->laptop network speed increased from average of 4.5MB/sec to 9.8MB/sec. I had done several tests before & after the clean install and I was pretty sure that everything else was set to exactly the same.

From what I've heard from the lenovo tech support, you can. You should be able to check out the "restore" options in thinkvantage at the boot screen first without doing the actual restore.
