    First Time poster

I have been having problems with my T400.

I have been getting a pretty bad fan clicking noise. It is on and off. Sometimes it is the completely normal hum, and at other times it sounds REALLY bad. Additionally, I occasionally get Fan Errors when I try and boot up. It's inconsistent and I can't replicate the situation that causes it.

I have accidentally dropped my laptop once because i forgot to zip up the side of my backpack. It was underw warranty, and i had to have some connector from display to the computer replaced. I am pretty sure this is when the noise started.

This happened once when it was under warranty, and when I called the technicians it ran fine when they were here. It's frustrating having a problem and not being able to show the person who is supposed to fix it.

Anyways, now that I am out of warranty (of course) its starting to get worse, and I am not sure what to do about it.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?
Is the fan bad? If so how much will that cost to fix?
Is it just dust? If so can I clean that myself with some compressed air?

I really appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Could be bad bearings grinding. Remember when you were a kid an your skateboard sounded like that? Why not disasseble the palm rest and keyboard and have a look? Could be something out of place an alignment issue easily fixed.

It could be a cable or something, but you never know until you open the machine.

I don'tknow enough about computers to feel comfortable doing that though...

would it be worth calling Lenovo to have a technician sent out?

    Hello Liminal,

I would suggest to contact Lenovo support, a fan error points to a hardware defekt.

If you dont feel comfortable opening up the case, then its best not to mess with it. But its designed to be user friendly. Just follow the instructions and there may be a video. You need to hold the blades down if shooting air into it. I suggest blowing on it and/or using a paint brush to loosen first. If you dont hold down the blades you could damage the fan.
