The fan in my T400 (type 2764-CTO) seems to be dying. According to the nearest Lenovo authorized repair center, they will just ship the whole thing out and replace the mainboard. Unfortunately its out of warranty so I figure that I would just do it myself. I got it working with a little oil in the fan and have relegated it to desk duty.

Lenovo shows two part numbers for the fan; 45N6144 and 45N6146. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell which one I need to get without taking the current one out, or does it even make a difference?

I'd buy them both and put the heaviest one in.

That's right.... either one will work. I've just replaced my fan (T400/switchable GPU). I called Lenovo in the morning to place the order..... the fan assembly was delivered to my door overnight.

I'd buy it on eBay. You'll pay less.

i think the difference in price for fans from IBM parts and ebay in USA is only 10 to 20 odd dollars, in which case i would pay slightly more for a peace of mind.

Thanks for the info Netranger and lead_org.

The pricing for the parts are currently USD$30.50 for 45N6144 and $46.50 for 45N6146 directly from lenovo. These prices without shipping are less than the buy it now shipped prices of fans listed as new on ebay. I'll be buying it directly from lenovo.

NetRanger, or anyone who has replaced a fan, any tips on installing it? I have a copy of the maintenance manual (43y6629_04.pdf) but I will appreciate any tips on the process.
