I found that when I connect my T400 with an external monitor, the laptop freezes at start up screen (The screen with Thinkpad logo and "Press blue ThinkVantage button to..."). When I disconnect the external monitor, and press ThinkVantage -> ESC, the laptop continues to boot normally.

How can I do to fix this problem?

go into the bios select vga+internal as the screen output.

Also, which GPU are you using the 3470 or the Intel when this happens?

and BIOS version are you on? try to update the bios and see whether that helps.

I discovered that not the external monitor make the laptop freeze, but the 3G (HSPDA) USB. BIOS recognizes it as an bootable device, so spends time to look for boot sector, which does not exist. I disabled this function, and now everything's fine :)
