I just received my new T400 today, and while it is great in general, there is noticable vibration in the palmrest from the hard drive. I got the 160GB 7200RPM hard drive which is made by Hitachi. Its enough that I can feel it on the left side as well, though its strongest on the right side. I can also hear a gentle whirring noise at all times. Is this normal and is there anything I can do myself to reduce the vibration?

Are you sure it's not the optical drive? I get some vibration sometimes but it's from the optical drive.

my HDD (also a 160GB 7200) has a slight vibration but zero noise (in fact it's a very quiet drive overall). I can feel it when I rest my right palm on the palmrest. I worried at first, but now just accept it.

My T500 also has the Hitachi 160GB 7200RPM drive. Funny thing is, contrary to pipspeak, I do hear continuous whirring (it's the loudest component on my laptop), but I do not feel any vibrations whatsoever.

Open up the hard drive area (one screw), and check to make sure it is seated well with the 2 rubber bumpers.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

infoflatlines- its not the optical drive because I used that yesterday to install Windows 7, and it vibrates like crazy! Not too concerned though because I barely plan to use it. I actually just removed the optical drive to check right now and the vibration definitely continued from the HDD.

MidnightSun- I will try opening up the harddrive area. That makes me nervous, and I'm such a perfectionist I worry I'd make it worse! Worth a try though. Otherwise I'll probably get used to it. Doesn't bother me that much except when I'm continuously typing and and my palm starts to get a bit numb from the vibrations.
