I've heard and read from reviews that the harddrives in the T400 are mediocre regardless of what speed they are. I am definitely going to get the 160 gig 7200 rpm now but will this still not be enough? Should I just get the basic hard drive that comes with the laptop and upgrade to another hdd myself? How are the 7200 rpm ones from Lenovo?

Hard drives are made by 3rd parties. If you want to upgrade you should do it on your own anyways, as that is usually the much cheaper route. Also you seem to be making a bunch of threads about t400s. You should probably have posted in a single new thread or asked in prior t400 discussion threads :p.

Also what does "mediocre regardless of what speed they are" mean. A 7200rpm drive does not necessarily imply it is faster than a 5400rpm drive in all types of benchmarks or use. A 5400rpm drive with denser platters can be faster in certain regards.
